New Hockey World Cup Format Introduced
The 2026 edition features a major change to the competition structure.
There will be no traditional quarter-final stage. Instead, teams progressing from the opening pools will enter a second phase known as the crossover pools.
Each men’s and women’s competition contains 16 teams divided into four opening pools. The top two teams from each pool progress to the second stage, where they compete for semi-final places.
The revised structure means every match during the opening stage carries significant importance, with teams needing strong results to remain in contention for the title.

India’s Hockey World Cup History
India have a rich history in international hockey, particularly at the Olympic Games, but their record at the World Cup has been more modest.
The Indian men made their World Cup debut at the inaugural tournament in 1971. Their biggest achievement came four years later when they captured the 1975 title.
India defeated Pakistan in the final in Kuala Lumpur to secure their only men’s Hockey World Cup championship.
The women’s team first appeared at the World Cup in 1974 but has never lifted the trophy.
Hockey World Cup 2026 Final Dates
The 2026 Hockey World Cup will conclude at the end of August.
The women’s final is scheduled for August 29, while the men’s final will take place on August 30. Bronze-medal matches will also be contested during the final weekend.
With the tournament introducing a new crossover-pool format and bringing the men’s and women’s competitions together, the 2026 edition promises a major change from previous Hockey World Cups.
For India, however, the immediate objective is clear: start strongly against Wales and move one step closer to ending the country’s long wait for another men’s Hockey World Cup title.
