ICC Cricket World Cup 2027: Schedule, Format, Teams and Qualification Explained

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is set to bring the 50-over global tournament back to Africa after 24 years, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia jointly hosting the competition.

The 14-team World Cup will feature 57 matches across 12 venues in the three host countries. The ICC has already confirmed a completely revamped tournament structure, including a preliminary Super Series, a 12-team group phase and a seven-team Super 7 stage before the semi-finals and final.

The ICC is expected to unveil the detailed World Cup schedule on October 1 in Cape Town. The tournament is currently expected to be played during October and November 2027, although the complete fixture list will provide the final dates and venues.

ICC World Cup 2027: What Has Been Confirmed?

The 2027 edition will be the 14th ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and will return to Africa for the first time since the 2003 tournament.

South Africa and Zimbabwe previously co-hosted the 2003 World Cup along with Kenya. Namibia, meanwhile, is preparing to stage senior men's Cricket World Cup matches for the first time.

The key confirmed details are:

  • Teams: 14
  • Matches: 57
  • Host countries: South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia
  • Venues: 12
  • South African venues: 8
  • Zimbabwean venues: 3
  • Namibian venue: 1
  • Tournament: ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027

The ICC says the competition will use a new three-stage format designed to create more meaningful matches and increase competitiveness throughout the tournament.

How Will Teams Qualify for the 2027 World Cup?

The qualification system has already been established by the ICC.

There will be 10 direct qualifiers for the 14-team World Cup. South Africa and Zimbabwe receive automatic places as Full Member host nations, while the other eight direct places will go to the highest-ranked eligible teams according to the designated ICC ODI rankings cut-off.

The remaining four World Cup places will be decided through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

This means hosting the tournament does not automatically guarantee Namibia a place in the competition.

Why Namibia Could Miss Its Own World Cup

Namibia's qualification situation is one of the most unusual aspects of the 2027 tournament.

Although the country is one of the three co-hosts, Namibia does not have an automatic World Cup berth. It must come through the qualification pathway.

Namibia is involved in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 pathway, which provides teams with a route towards the World Cup Qualifier. The top four teams from League 2 progress to the Qualifier, while additional teams enter through the Qualifier Play-Offs.

The final four teams from the Qualifier will secure places in the 2027 World Cup.

As a result, Namibia could potentially host World Cup matches without its own national team appearing in the tournament.

West Indies Also Face a Qualification Battle

The qualification race will be closely watched by several established cricketing nations.

The West Indies, two-time men's ODI World Cup champions, are among the teams that may need to navigate the qualification route depending on their position at the relevant ranking cut-off.

The 2027 qualification process therefore carries particular importance for teams outside the automatic places, with only four World Cup berths available through the Qualifier.

2027 World Cup Introduces a New Format

The ICC has made major changes to the structure of the 2027 World Cup.

Unlike the previous 10-team format, the 14 qualified teams will enter a three-stage competition before the semi-finals and final.

Stage 1: Super Series

The three lowest-ranked teams among the 14 World Cup qualifiers will begin the tournament in a Super Series.

Those three teams will play each other in a round-robin format. Only the team finishing first will advance to the next stage.

This means three of the 14 qualified teams will have to fight through the opening stage before entering the main group competition.

Stage 2: Two Groups of Six

The winner of the Super Series will join the other 11 teams in the next phase, creating a 12-team competition.

The teams will be divided into two groups of six.

Each team will play every other side in its group, producing a total of 30 matches in this phase.

The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7. One additional team will also advance — the best-performing fourth-placed team across the two groups.

Stage 3: Super 7

The next phase will feature seven teams.

Every team will play the other six sides once, resulting in 21 matches.

At the end of the Super 7 stage, the top four teams in the points table will qualify for the semi-finals.

The first-placed team will face the fourth-placed team, while the second-placed side will meet the third-placed team in the other semi-final.

The two semi-final winners will then meet in the World Cup final.

2027 World Cup Venues: 12 Grounds Confirmed

Africa to Host Men's ODI World Cup Again After 24 Years

The 2027 tournament will mark the return of the men's ODI World Cup to Africa after a 24-year gap.

The previous African edition was held in 2003, when South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya jointly staged the tournament.

The 2027 competition will therefore represent another major chapter for cricket in the region, with Namibia joining South Africa and Zimbabwe as a senior men's World Cup host for the first time.

With 14 teams, 57 matches and an entirely new competitive structure, the 2027 World Cup is set to be significantly different from the 2023 edition.

The detailed fixture schedule, including the opening match, India’s fixtures, venue allocation, semi-final dates and final venue, is expected to provide the next major update in the build-up to the tournament.
