Former West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara has joined growing international concern over the condition of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, calling for proper medical treatment and dignified care.
Lara made the appeal through Instagram, stressing that his intervention was based on humanitarian concerns rather than politics. He said Imran Khan should receive appropriate medical attention and be treated with dignity and sensitivity.
The development comes amid renewed international concern over Imran Khan's health and treatment in prison. Several former international cricket captains have also appealed to Pakistan's government over his medical care.
Brian Lara Expresses Concern Over Imran Khan's Treatment
Lara recalled his encounters with Imran Khan during their playing careers and said his admiration for the former Pakistan captain had remained strong over the years.
According to Lara, it is difficult to understand how a cricketer who once represented hope, national pride and inspiration for Pakistan has reached a situation where concerns are being raised over his welfare in custody.
The West Indies legend said Imran Khan deserves proper care and the respect expected for any human being, regardless of the political or legal circumstances surrounding his imprisonment.
Former Cricket Captains Appeal for Imran Khan's Medical Care
The appeal from Brian Lara comes shortly after a group of former international cricket captains renewed their request to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding Imran Khan's health.
The latest letter, dated August 23, called for humane treatment, proper medical care and an independent assessment of Khan's health. Former Indian captains Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar were among the prominent names associated with the appeal.
The former cricketers also called for court-directed medical procedures to be completed and for any treatment recommended by medical professionals to be provided without delay.
Their latest intervention followed concerns surrounding a recent medical examination of Khan after Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered that he be taken for medical assessment.
Imran Khan Returned to Adiala Jail After Medical Examination
Imran Khan was recently taken to a hospital in Islamabad for a medical examination before being returned to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Reports said the former Pakistan prime minister was examined at a government hospital and subsequently returned to prison. The cricket legends who appealed for his care questioned whether the medical process fully reflected the Supreme Court's directions.
The issue has intensified concerns among Khan's supporters, family members and former cricket colleagues over his health and access to medical treatment while in custody.
Imran Khan Has Been in Prison Since 2023
The 73-year-old Imran Khan has remained in prison since 2023 following his arrest in connection with the Toshakhana case. He subsequently faced several other legal proceedings, including cases involving the Al-Qadir Trust and the cipher matter.

Khan received relief in some of those cases, while other convictions and legal proceedings have continued to keep him behind bars.
His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has repeatedly alleged that the cases against him are politically motivated and aimed at preventing his return to active politics.
Pakistan's government and investigating authorities have rejected those allegations, maintaining that Khan's cases are being handled through the country's legal and judicial system.
Brian Lara's Appeal Adds to International Pressure
Brian Lara's intervention adds another prominent cricketing voice to the growing international appeal concerning Imran Khan's health.
For Lara, the issue extends beyond politics and cricket. His message focuses on ensuring that a former world champion, national leader and fellow cricketer receives appropriate medical attention and humane treatment while in custody.
The continuing appeals from former cricket captains have placed renewed international attention on Imran Khan's health, medical care and conditions in Adiala Jail.
