India’s Defence Production Set to Hit Record ₹1.78 Lakh Crore in 2025-26, Exports Cross 100 Countries

India's defence manufacturing (mod) sector is on track to achieve a historic milestone, with annual defence production projected to reach an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26. The latest figures released by the Ministry of Defence (ddpmod) indicate a sharp rise in domestic military production, highlighting the success of the government's push for self-reliance and indigenous defence manufacturing.
According to official data, the projected output represents a 15.6 percent increase from the ₹1.54 lakh crore recorded in 2024-25. Compared with the ₹84,643 crore achieved in 2020-21, India's defence production has expanded by more than 110 percent in just five years.
The growth becomes even more remarkable when compared to 2013-14, when indigenous defence production stood at only ₹43,746 crore. The latest estimates suggest that India's defence manufacturing output has nearly quadrupled over the past decade.
PM Modi Highlights Growth of India's Defence Sector
Prime Minister (pm) Narendra Modi highlighted the transformation of India's defence ecosystem, stating that the sector has witnessed unprecedented growth over the last 12 years through self-reliance, innovation, advanced technology, and indigenous manufacturing.
The rapid expansion is being viewed as a major achievement under the government's Aatmanirbharbharat and Make in India Defence initiatives, which aim to reduce dependence on imports while strengthening domestic production capabilities.
Defence Exports Reach More Than 100 Countries
India's defence exports have also recorded significant growth, with military equipment and defence systems now being shipped to more than 100 countries across the world. Key export destinations include the United States, France, and Armenia.
The United States remains the largest buyer of Indian defence products. Defence systems and components worth nearly $2.8 billion have been supplied to major American companies such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Meanwhile, countries including Armenia have procured complete Indian-made weapon systems.
Government Targets ₹50,000 Crore Defence Exports by 2030
Encouraged by the steady rise in overseas demand, the Government of India has set an ambitious target of achieving ₹50,000 crore in annual defence exports by 2029-30.
The progress has been remarkable. Defence exports stood at just ₹1,522 crore in 2016-17. Since then, export earnings have surged more than twenty-five times, reflecting India's growing position in the global defence market.
Operation Sindoor Boosts Global Confidence
Officials believe that the international attention generated by Operation Sindoor has further enhanced India's reputation as a reliable defence manufacturer. The operation has increased global interest in Indian military technology and is expected to support future export growth.
With record defence production, rapidly expanding exports, and increasing international demand for indigenous military equipment, India is emerging as a major player in the global defence industry while steadily advancing toward its long-term self-reliance goals.
