India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup securing progression to the next round while ending Pakistan’s campaign. The Pool D encounter was played at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands.

India dominated the early stages of the match, with captain Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek scoring twice each. Vice-captain Hardik Singh added another goal as India produced a five-goal attacking display.

Pakistan responded through Hannan Shahid, who scored twice, while Sufyan Khan contributed one goal. Despite their fightback, Pakistan could not overturn India’s advantage and were eliminated from the Hockey World Cup.

Harmanpreet and Abhishek Put India in Control

Harmanpreet opened India’s scoring by converting a penalty corner in the fifth minute. Abhishek then extended the advantage with a field goal in the 11th minute.

Harmanpreet struck again from a penalty corner in the 21st minute before Abhishek added his second goal three minutes later.

Pakistan attempted to recover during the second quarter, with Hannan Shahid and Sufyan Khan finding the net as the match developed into a high-scoring contest.

Hardik Singh Seals India's 5-3 Victory

Hardik Singh restored India’s advantage by converting a penalty stroke in the 35th minute. The opportunity followed a stick-related foul involving Pakistani defender Arshad and India’s Aditya.

Hannan Shahid scored again in the 46th minute, giving Pakistan renewed hope. However, India’s defence held firm during the closing stages to secure a crucial 5-3 Hockey World Cup victory over Pakistan.

India Through to Next Round of Hockey World Cup

The victory confirmed India’s qualification for the next stage of the 2026 Men’s Hockey World Cup. The tournament is being jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30, with 16 men’s teams competing for the world title.

India had earlier opened its campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales, with Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice in that match.

Harmanpreet Singh Leads Hockey World Cup Scoring Chart

Harmanpreet Singh’s two goals against Pakistan took his tournament tally to five goals, placing him at the top of the competition’s scoring standings. Abhishek has also emerged among India’s leading scorers after his brace against Pakistan.

The Indian captain’s performance has been central to the team’s progress in the tournament.

India Maintains Strong Record Against Pakistan

The 5-3 result further strengthened India’s recent dominance in the historic hockey rivalry. India entered the contest having maintained a long unbeaten run against Pakistan in their recent meetings.

The latest World Cup victory also adds another significant chapter to one of international hockey’s most closely followed rivalries.

The 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup continues through August 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands.
