Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese unveiled a series of landmark agreements following bilateral discussions in Melbourne, significantly strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations. The announcements covered uranium exports, defence cooperation, trade, clean energy, space technology, cybersecurity and advanced research.
Australia to Supply Uranium to India
One of the most significant outcomes of the meeting was the formalization of Australia's uranium exports to India under the 2015 India-Australia Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement. The agreement makes Australia the fifth country supplying uranium to India for its civilian nuclear energy programme.

The initiative is expected to strengthen cooperation in processing and sourcing minerals required for electric vehicles, renewable energy projects, batteries and high-end manufacturing.
Space Cooperation to Support Gaganyaan Mission
Space collaboration received a major boost as Australia agreed to establish a space tracking facility on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The installation will provide tracking and communication support for India's ambitious human spaceflight programme, the Gaganyaan Mission.
The move reflects expanding cooperation between the two countries in advanced space technology.
Modi Compares Bilateral Ties to Cricket
Highlighting the growing friendship between the two democracies, Prime Minister Modi used a cricket analogy to describe bilateral engagement.
He remarked that discussions between India and Australia resemble the sport itself—strategic like One Day Internationals, decisive like T20 matches and enduring like Test cricket, emphasizing the long-term strength of the relationship.
Joint Stand Against Terrorism
Prime Minister Modi also stressed that both countries view terrorism as one of the greatest global challenges. He said India and Australia remain committed to expanding intelligence sharing and security cooperation to counter terrorism effectively.
Albanese Highlights Policy Alignment
Prime Minister Albanese described the uranium agreement as a major milestone in bilateral relations. He noted that while both nations had long been connected through supply chains, closer policy coordination would now deepen strategic and economic cooperation.
He reaffirmed Australia's commitment to implementing the nuclear cooperation agreement and expanding collaboration across multiple sectors.
New Partnership in Emerging Technologies
The leaders also launched the Australia-India Cyber, Critical Technology and Supply Chain (PACTS) Partnership.
The initiative will promote joint research, innovation and industrial cooperation in
several cutting-edge fields, including:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Quantum Computing
- Semiconductor Manufacturing
- Cybersecurity
- Digital Resilience
- Critical Technologies
- Supply Chain Security
The partnership is expected to enhance technological collaboration while reducing dependence on vulnerable global supply chains.
Strategic Significance
The comprehensive package of agreements marks another milestone in the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. With cooperation now spanning nuclear energy, defence, critical minerals, emerging technologies and space exploration, both countries are positioning themselves as key partners in ensuring economic resilience, clean energy security and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
