India Chase 406 Against West Indies: Shubman Gill Creates ODI History With Fastest Double Century

Shubman Gill produced a breathtaking record-breaking innings as India completed one of the most extraordinary run chases in ODI cricket, defeating the West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Chasing a huge target of 406, India reached 406/2 in just 43.3 overs, completing the second-highest successful run chase in men's ODI cricket. The victory also gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

The night belonged overwhelmingly to captain Shubman Gill, who remained unbeaten on a sensational 223 from 133 deliveries. His innings contained 26 fours and eight sixes and took India's chase from a daunting assignment to a historic victory.

Gill's double century was particularly significant because he reached the landmark in only 117 balls, making it the fastest ODI double century in men's international cricket. He surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous Indian record of 126 balls, achieved against Bangladesh in 2022.

Shubman Gill's 223* Turns Record Chase Into Reality

West Indies appeared to have established an enormous target after posting 405/7 in 50 overs.

John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all struck centuries as the Caribbean side produced its highest ODI total. Campbell made 101, Hope scored 104 and Jangoo contributed 114, putting India under considerable pressure before the chase began.

India's response, however, was even more extraordinary.

Gill and Rohit Sharma immediately attacked the West Indies bowling attack and constructed a 255-run opening partnership. Rohit eventually departed for a rapid 101 from 75 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes.

Gill continued his assault after Rohit's departure and moved beyond his previous ODI best of 208. He eventually finished unbeaten on 223, guiding India across the finishing line alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Gaikwad remained not out on 31, while Virat Kohli made 29 before being dismissed.

Gill Breaks Ishan Kishan's Fastest Double-Century Record

Gill's 117-ball double century has rewritten the ODI record books.

Ishan Kishan previously held the record for the fastest Indian ODI double hundred after reaching 200 from 126 deliveries against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.

Gill improved that mark by nine balls and also became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double centuries. His previous 200-plus score came against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023, when he made 208.

The latest innings also gave Gill his highest ODI score, surpassing his previous 208.

India Complete Only the Second Successful 400-Plus ODI Chase

India's victory in Guwahati has placed the team in an exclusive statistical category.

Before this match, South Africa were the only side to successfully chase a target above 400 in men's ODI cricket. South Africa famously chased 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006, a record that remains the highest successful chase in ODI history.

India's 406/2 is now the second-highest successful chase in men's ODI cricket.

The achievement is even more striking because India's previous highest successful ODI chase was 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2019. The Guwahati performance therefore raised India's national record by 44 runs.

Rohit Sharma Adds Another Century to Historic ODI Career

Rohit Sharma played a crucial role in setting up India's record chase.

The veteran opener scored 101 from 75 deliveries, providing the initial momentum alongside Gill. Their 255-run partnership was India's second-highest opening stand in ODI cricket, behind the 258-run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly against Kenya in 2001.

Rohit's century was also his 35th ODI hundred, adding another milestone to his already remarkable limited-overs career.

West Indies Post 405 Despite Three Centuries

West Indies' batting performance would ordinarily have been enough to put enormous pressure on an opposition side.

Campbell's 101, Hope's 104 and Jangoo's 114 helped the visitors reach 405/7, their highest ODI total. Yet even three centuries could not prevent defeat as India's top order produced an extraordinary response.

The match therefore became a remarkable contrast between two exceptional batting performances: West Indies crossed 400, only for India to chase the total down with 39 balls still remaining.

India Take Unassailable 2-0 Series Lead

The Guwahati result means India have already secured the three-match ODI series with a match still to play.

India won the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets, with centuries from Gill and Virat Kohli. Kohli's unbeaten 139 also took him beyond the landmark of 15,000 ODI runs, becoming only the second player to reach the milestone after Sachin Tendulkar.

Gill has now followed that opening-match century with one of the most extraordinary individual ODI performances of his career.

The third and final ODI will determine whether India can complete a clean sweep, but the second match in Guwahati will already be remembered for Gill's record-breaking double century and India's remarkable 406-run chase.
