India has intensified its multi-event sporting ambitions, now targeting the 2038 Asian Games after bidding for the 2036 Olympics and preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Indian Olympic Association has formally expressed interest, with the Olympic Council of Asia reviewing the proposal during its Executive Board meeting in Sanya, China. An evaluation team is expected to visit India soon.
The planned host city is Ahmedabad, which is also central to India’s Olympic and CWG plans. Major infrastructure projects are already underway:
- The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, a 355-acre hub near the Narendra Modi Stadium, will include aquatics facilities, a tennis center, and an indoor arena.
- A sports hub in Gandhinagar will feature an athletics stadium, shooting complex, and other venues across 143 acres.
India last hosted the Asian Games in 1982 (New Delhi), after first hosting in 1951. A successful 2038 bid would bring the Games back after 56 years.
Officials argue the timing is strategic: infrastructure developed for the 2030 CWG and potential 2036 Olympics could be reused, significantly lowering costs while maximizing long-term value.
