India-Indonesia Sign 20 Strategic Agreements; BrahMos Missile Deal Headlines PM Modi's Jakarta Visit

India (Ministry of External Affairs )and Indonesia elevated their strategic partnership to a new level on Tuesday by signing 20 wide-ranging bilateral agreements covering defence, maritime security, digital payments, critical minerals, democratic cooperation and infrastructure during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Jakarta.

The biggest highlight of the summit was Indonesia's decision to procure additional BrahMos supersonic cruise missile systems from India after months of negotiations. With this agreement, Indonesia joins the Philippines and Vietnam as one of the few countries operating the world's fastest operational supersonic cruise missile.

The agreements were finalized during delegation-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, reflecting the rapidly expanding strategic relationship between the two Indo-Pacific nations.

Indonesia to Buy Astra Missile; India to Assist in EVM Development

In another major defence breakthrough, Indonesia confirmed its decision to acquire India's indigenous Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, which gained international attention following its operational success during Operation Sindoor.

India also agreed to support Indonesia in developing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), marking an important milestone in democratic and institutional cooperation between the two countries.

President Prabowo Honours PM Modi

On the second day of his Indonesia visit, Prime Minister Modi was conferred Indonesia's highest civilian honour by President Prabowo Subianto in recognition of his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.

Later in the evening, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address members of the Indian diaspora in Jakarta before travelling to Yogyakarta on Wednesday. There, he and President Prabowo will jointly visit the 1,000-year-old Prambanan Temple, one of Southeast Asia's largest Hindu temple complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizing centuries-old civilizational ties.

Addressing the joint press interaction, Prime Minister Modi stressed that diplomacy and dialogue remain the best path toward resolving global conflicts.

Reaffirming India's long-standing position on Palestine, he reiterated support for a two-state solution and emphasized the need for lasting peace through negotiations.

The Prime Minister said India and Indonesia are entering a "golden era" of cooperation, built upon shared history, cultural heritage, democratic values and mutual trust. He expressed confidence that both nations would jointly realize the vision of "Indonesia Emas" (Golden Indonesia) alongside India's development goals.

Highlighting democratic collaboration, Modi welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Election Commissions of both countries, describing it as another pillar of bilateral cooperation.

He also reaffirmed India's commitment to ASEAN's central role in ensuring stability, security and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.

Critical Minerals, Steel Manufacturing and UPI Integration

Recognizing the growing importance of resilient supply chains, both governments agreed to deepen cooperation in critical minerals, steel manufacturing and rare earth resources.

Indian and Indonesian companies will establish new industrial partnerships in stainless steel, nickel and rare earth magnet production, sectors considered vital for electric vehicles, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

The leaders also announced that India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will soon be linked with Indonesia's digital payment infrastructure, making tourism, trade and cross-border financial transactions significantly easier.
