India Launches First Hydrogen Train, PM Modi Flags Off World's Most Powerful Green Rail Service

India entered a new era of sustainable rail transportation on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country's first hydrogen-powered passenger train, marking a historic achievement for Indian Railways and clean energy mobility. The eco-friendly train commenced its maiden journey between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, making India the fifth nation globally to operate hydrogen-powered trains.
With this launch, India joins an exclusive list of countries including Germany, France, Sweden, and China, all of which have already introduced hydrogen-powered railway services.
PM Modi: India's Hydrogen Train is the World's Most Powerful
Addressing a public gathering after inaugurating the service, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the newly introduced train as the world's most powerful hydrogen-powered train. He emphasized that the project showcases India's technological self-reliance, as the train was conceptualized by Indian engineers and manufactured by an Indian company under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
According to the Prime Minister, the launch represents another milestone in India's mission to develop environmentally friendly transport systems while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Hydrogen Train to Cover 89 Kilometres Across 14 Stations
The newly introduced 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat railway corridor, serving 14 stations along the route. The train can attain a maximum speed of 75 km per hour and will complete the 89-kilometre journey in around two hours.
Ticket prices have been kept affordable, ranging from ₹5 to ₹25, making green transportation accessible to ordinary passengers.
During its inaugural service, the train departed Jind at 11:22 AM and arrived in Sonipat at 1:22 PM, maintaining its scheduled travel time.

Cleanliness Should Become a Public Habit
The Prime Minister appealed to citizens to transform cleanliness into a permanent social culture. Referring to recent sanitation campaigns shared on social media, he urged residents of Jind to make cleanliness an inseparable part of everyday life rather than treating it as a temporary initiative.
Nearly Entire Railway Network Electrified
Highlighting the transformation of Indian Railways, Modi said that between 1925 and 2014, only about 30% of the national railway network had been electrified. Over the past twelve years, however, electrification has reached almost 99% of the network.
He noted that this has significantly reduced India's dependence on diesel, making railway operations more resilient during global energy supply disruptions.
