India-Russia defence logistics deal active

The Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Support (RELOS) defence agreement between India and Russia has officially come into effect, marking a significant step in deepening military cooperation between the two nations.

Under the pact, both countries can deploy up to 3,000 troops on each other’s territory, along with five warships and 10 military aircraft. The agreement also grants access to each other’s military bases, airbases, and ports, enabling smoother long-term deployment and operational coordination.

A key feature of the deal is logistical support—covering fuel, water, maintenance, technical assistance, and other essential supplies. It also includes air traffic control and flight-related services for military aircraft.

Signed in February 2025 and ratified by Russia in December 2025, the agreement will remain valid for five years, with the option of extension through mutual consent.

Importantly, the RELOS agreement is not intended for wartime use. It is designed strictly for peacetime activities such as joint exercises, training, and logistical cooperation.

Overall, the deal is being viewed as a major boost to the strategic partnership between India and Russia, strengthening defence coordination and operational synergy between the two countries.
