A devastating Indian Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft crash in Assam claimed the lives of five Air Force personnel on Saturday after an Antonov AN-32 military transport aircraft went down while attempting to land at the Rouriya Air Force Station in Jorhat. The tragic incident has once again brought attention to the operational challenges faced by India's military aviation fleet.
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. during a routine flight operation. According to preliminary reports, the AN-32 transport aircraft encountered difficulties during its landing approach before crashing near the runway. Moments after impact, the aircraft caught fire and broke apart, causing extensive damage.
Five Air Force Personnel Killed In AN-32 Crash
The deceased personnel have been identified as Squadron Leader Prashant Singh, Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat, and Agniveervayu Danish Alam. A co-pilot sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment.
The Indian Air Force expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and assured full support during this difficult period.
Court Of Inquiry Ordered Into Assam Air Crash
The Indian Air Force confirmed that the aircraft was undertaking a routine operational mission at the time of the accident. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation regarding the cause of the crash until a detailed investigation is completed.
A Court of Inquiry has been constituted to determine the exact circumstances that led to the AN-32 crash. Investigators will examine technical systems, flight operations, maintenance records, and weather conditions as part of the probe.
AN-32 Aircraft: Backbone Of India's Tactical Airlift Fleet
The Antonov AN-32 is a medium tactical transport aircraft that has been serving the Indian Air Force since the early 1980s. Designed to operate in extreme climatic and high-altitude conditions, the aircraft plays a crucial role in troop movement, logistics support, disaster relief operations, and supply missions in remote regions, including the Himalayas.
India originally inducted 125 AN-32 aircraft into service. Currently, around 100 aircraft remain operational and continue to form a vital component of the country's military transport capability.
