India wrapped up an outstanding campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, collecting 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze, to secure fourth place in the overall medal standings.
Although the overall tally fell short of the 61 medals won at Birmingham 2022, the numbers alone do not tell the complete story. The Glasgow edition featured only 10 sports, compared to 19 disciplines in Birmingham, making India's achievement considerably more significant.
Smaller Commonwealth Games, Bigger Challenge
The absence of major medal-producing sports such as badminton, wrestling, shooting, hockey, table tennis and cricket dramatically reduced India's medal opportunities.
These six disciplines alone had contributed 30 medals during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, leaving India with far fewer chances to compete for podium finishes in Glasgow.
Reduced Contingent Produces Higher Efficiency
India had initially planned to send around 210 athletes, but eventually fielded only 123 competitors.
Despite the smaller delegation, 38 athletes won medals, giving India an impressive 31% medal conversion rate, higher than the 29% achieved in Birmingham 2022.
The improved efficiency underlines the quality of India's performances despite limited participation.
Boxing Becomes India's Biggest Medal Factory
Indian boxing emerged as the nation's most successful discipline.
The boxing squad collected 10 medals, comprising 7 gold and 3 silver, contributing more than 25% of India's total medal tally.

India Retains Fourth Position in Medal Standings
For the second straight Commonwealth Games, India finished fourth overall.
Although the country secured 13 gold medals, compared to 22 golds in Birmingham, maintaining a top-four finish despite fewer events and a much smaller contingent highlights India's competitive consistency.
Indian Athletes Exceed Official Medal Predictions
Before the Games, assessments by the Indian Olympic Association and national sports federations projected 31 medals, including six gold medals.
Instead, Indian athletes surpassed every expectation by winning 39 medals and 13 golds, more than doubling the anticipated gold tally.
Athletics Delivers Numbers but Misses Gold
India expected boxing, athletics and weightlifting to lead the medal hunt.
Collectively, the three sports delivered 26 medals.
However, athletics experienced its biggest disappointment after failing to secure a single gold medal despite winning eight medals overall.

Para Athletes Deliver Exceptional Results
India sent only 11 para-athletes to Glasgow.

Historic Breakthrough in Judo
Indian judo scripted history by winning its first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Asmita Dey became the nation's first Commonwealth judo champion before Harsh Singh added another gold shortly afterwards.
