Gujarat Titans moved a step closer to the IPL playoffs after registering a massive 82-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday night.
Led by Shubman Gill, Gujarat defended a target of 169 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad by bowling Hyderabad out for just 86 in 14.5 overs.
The heavy defeat also dented Hyderabad’s net run rate significantly.
At present, Gujarat, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Punjab Kings occupy the top four spots in the IPL points table.
Gujarat Register Fifth Straight Win
The Titans recorded their fifth consecutive victory of the season and climbed from third place to the top of the standings.
Hyderabad, meanwhile, suffered their fifth defeat of the campaign and slipped from second place to third.
Gujarat now has 16 points from 12 matches, winning eight and losing four. The team still has league-stage matches remaining against Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings. One more win will officially confirm their playoff qualification.
Sunrisers Hyderabad currently has 14 points after winning seven of their 12 matches. They must win both their remaining fixtures against Chennai and Bengaluru to guarantee a place in the playoffs.
Bengaluru Eye Top Spot Against Kolkata
Attention now shifts to Wednesday’s IPL clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, scheduled to be played at the Raipur International Cricket Stadium from 7:30 PM IST.
Under captain Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru currently sits second in the points table with 14 points from 11 matches.
A victory against Kolkata would take Bengaluru to 16 points and potentially lift them to the top spot due to a superior net run rate. However, a defeat would leave them needing victories in both remaining league matches.
For Kolkata, led by Ajinkya Rahane, every remaining match has become crucial.
The Knight Riders currently have nine points from 11 matches, including four wins and one no-result. Another defeat could severely damage their playoff hopes and make qualification dependent on other results.
Orange Cap And Purple Cap Race Intensifies
Sai Sudharsan moved to second place in the Orange Cap standings after scoring 61 runs against Hyderabad. He now has 501 runs this season.
Hyderabad batter Heinrich Klaasen leads the Orange Cap race with 508 runs, while Abhishek Sharma occupies third place with 481 runs.
In the Purple Cap standings, Gujarat pacer Kagiso Rabada climbed to second place after taking three wickets in the match. Rabada now has 21 wickets from 12 games.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar of Royal Challengers Bengaluru remains the Purple Cap holder with 21 wickets, while Anshul Kamboj of Chennai Super Kings is third with 19 wickets.
