IPL 2026 Playoffs: Bengaluru, Gujarat, Hyderabad and Rajasthan Reveal the Winning Formula Behind Their Successful Campaigns

The playoff stage of the Indian Premier League is officially set, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on May 26, while Sunrisers Hyderabad take on Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator on May 27.

The four franchises followed different routes to the IPL 2026 playoffs, but detailed statistics reveal four common factors that shaped their successful campaigns:

  • Powerful top-order batting
  • Match-winning bowling units
  • Frequent 200+ totals
  • Consistency throughout the league stage

Strong Top Order Became the Foundation of IPL 2026 Success

One of the biggest trends in IPL 2026 has been the dominance of top-order batsmen.

This season, five teams had their top three batters collectively score more than 1,300 runs. Out of those five teams, four successfully qualified for the playoffs.

Punjab Kings remained the only exception. Despite their top-order batters crossing the 1,300-run mark, Punjab failed to secure a top-four finish.

The remaining five teams in the tournament could not even manage 1,200 combined runs from their top three scorers, highlighting how crucial explosive starts have become in modern T20 cricket.

Bowling Strength Played a Crucial Role in Playoff Qualification

Bowling consistency also emerged as a major deciding factor in IPL 2026.

Only five teams had their top three bowlers combine for 45 or more wickets this season, and four of them reached the playoffs.

Chennai Super Kings narrowly missed qualification despite their leading bowling trio taking a combined 48 wickets.

Among the teams that failed to qualify:

  • Delhi Capitals
  • Lucknow Super Giants
  • Mumbai Indians
  • Punjab Kings

all struggled to get even 40 wickets collectively

from their three leading bowlers.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders came close with 44 wickets from their best bowling performers.

200+ Scores Dominated IPL 2026

High-scoring matches became one of the defining features of IPL 2026.

Five teams scored 200 or more runs at least six times during the league phase. Four of those teams advanced to the playoffs.

Once again, Punjab became the only exception despite posting 200-plus totals nine times.

Among the playoff teams:

  • Hyderabad scored 200+ totals nine times
  • Bengaluru crossed 200 eight times
  • Rajasthan achieved the feat seven times
  • Gujarat scored 200 or more six times

The remaining franchises recorded five or fewer 200-plus totals, proving how aggressive batting approaches are increasingly deciding T20 matches.

Consistency Helped Bengaluru, Gujarat and Hyderabad Stay Ahead

Consistency remained one of the biggest reasons behind playoff qualification.

Three playoff teams — Bengaluru, Gujarat and Hyderabad — never lost more than two consecutive matches during the entire league stage.

Only Rajasthan suffered a three-match losing streak once.

Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad also recorded the joint-longest winning streaks of the season, winning five consecutive matches each.

Punjab started strongly by winning six of their first seven matches, with one game abandoned due to rain. However, their campaign collapsed after a damaging six-match losing streak that ultimately cost them a playoff berth.
