Kamakhya Beckons Millions As Ambubachi Mela Rekindles Ancient Traditions

The annual Ambubachi Mela 2026, one of the largest and most revered religious gatherings in Northeast India, has officially commenced at the historic Kamakhya Temple a top Nilachal Hills in Guwahati. The four-day spiritual festival began on June 22 and will continue till June 26, attracting lakhs of devotees, saints, and pilgrims from across the country.
The Ambubachi Mela is observed every year to mark the sacred annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, symbolising fertility, creation, and the divine feminine in the Shakti tradition. The festival holds immense religious significance among devotees of Shaktism and Tantric practices.
Kamakhya Temple Sanctum Closed For Ritual Observance
Following centuries-old customs, the doors of the main sanctum sanctorum of the Kamakhya Temple have been closed for the first three days of the festival. The shrine will reopen for devotees on June 26 after the completion of traditional religious rituals and ceremonies.
Temple authorities have estimated that more than eight lakh devotees and sadhus are likely to participate in this year's Ambubachi Mela, making it one of the biggest spiritual congregations in the region.
Massive Security Arrangements In Place
In view of the huge influx of pilgrims, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has implemented elaborate security arrangements around the temple complex and adjoining areas. Extensive CCTV surveillance, enhanced police deployment, and advanced crowd-management systems have been introduced to ensure smooth movement and safety of visitors.
Several devotees and saints attending the festival praised the administration for improved infrastructure, better access routes, and effective crowd-control measures. Special facilities and dedicated pathways have also been arranged for sadhus and ascetics to facilitate a hassle-free pilgrimage experience.
Saints From Across India Participate
Religious leaders and spiritual practitioners from states including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and West Bengal have already reached Guwahati to take part in the sacred event.
Saints associated with both Tantric and Satvik traditions consider Ambubachi Mela a highly significant spiritual occasion. Naga Sanyasis and members of various akhadas are also participating in large numbers, adding to the grandeur of the festival.
