Kharge Row Over ‘Terrorist’ Remark on PM Modi

Mallikarjun Kharge triggered a political controversy in Chennai on Tuesday after his remarks about Narendra Modi were widely interpreted as calling him a “terrorist.” He later issued a clarification, saying his statement had been misunderstood.

The Indian National Congress president explained that he was referring to what he described as the Prime Minister’s tendency to “intimidate people and opposition parties,” not labeling him a terrorist.

The Bharatiya Janata Party reacted sharply, demanding an apology and accusing Kharge of using inappropriate language.

Kharge has previously courted controversy with his remarks about Modi, including comparisons to Timur and other critical comments, which were later clarified.

The incident comes as campaigning wrapped up for all 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and the first phase of 152 seats in West Bengal. The second phase of polling in Bengal will be held on April 29, with results scheduled for May 4.
