Virat Kohli produced another landmark performance in one-day international cricket as India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the opening ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday.
Kohli remained unbeaten on a spectacular 139 from 88 balls, while India captain Shubman Gill scored 110 as the hosts chased down the West Indies' 296-run target in just 41.4 overs. India finished on 300/2 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
The victory was overshadowed only by the number of milestones achieved by Kohli. The former India captain completed his 55th ODI century and crossed the 15,000-run mark in
ICC ODI cricket, becoming only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the landmark.
Virat Kohli Completes 15,000 ODI Runs
Kohli reached 15,000 ODI runs during India's successful run chase in Thiruvananthapuram.
He accomplished the feat in his 303rd ODI innings, making him the fastest batter to reach the landmark. Sachin Tendulkar previously held the record, having taken 377 innings to complete 15,000 ODI runs.
The achievement added another major chapter to Kohli's extraordinary ODI career, particularly because he reached the milestone during an aggressive innings that eventually carried India comfortably beyond the target.
Kohli Smashes 55th ODI Century
Kohli's unbeaten 139 was his 55th century in ODI cricket.
He reached three figures from 74 balls before continuing his assault on the West Indies attack. His innings contained 10 fours and nine sixes, with the nine maximums representing his highest tally of sixes in a single ODI innings.
Kohli's hundred was also his 10th ODI century against the West Indies, adding another notable statistic to his record against the Caribbean side.
Nine Sixes: Kohli Sets a New Personal ODI Record
One of the most striking features of Kohli's innings was his power-hitting.
The 37-year-old struck nine sixes, the most he has ever hit in a single ODI innings. His previous best was eight sixes.
Kohli's aggressive approach was particularly evident during the final stages of the chase. He finished the match in style, remaining unbeaten as India completed the target with 50 balls to spare.
Shubman Gill Hits 110 in India's Successful Chase
Kohli was not the only Indian batter to produce a century.
Captain Shubman Gill scored 110, registering his 10th ODI hundred. Gill and Kohli combined for a substantial second-wicket partnership that effectively ended West Indies' hopes of defending their total.
India's chase had started positively through Rohit Sharma, who contributed 32 from 35 deliveries. After his dismissal, Gill and Kohli took control of the innings.
Gill eventually departed after making 110, but Kohli remained at the crease until the winning runs were scored.
West Indies Score 295 as Justin Greaves Makes Maiden ODI Century
Earlier, West Indies posted 295/7 in their allotted 50 overs.
Justin Greaves emerged as the visitors' leading performer with a maiden ODI century, scoring 101 from 108 deliveries. He received strong support from John Campbell, who made 62, as the pair established a 135-run opening partnership.
Greaves' century was a significant personal achievement, but West Indies were unable to maintain their momentum after the opening partnership was broken.
Kuldeep Yadav Changes the Course of the Match
India's comeback with the ball was led by Kuldeep Yadav.
The left-arm wrist-spinner claimed four wickets for 40 runs from 10 overs, breaking through the West Indies middle order after the visitors had reached a strong position.
West Indies slipped from 176/1 to 198/5, allowing India to restrict the visitors to 295/7 instead of a much larger total.
Amir Jangoo provided a late boost with an unbeaten 58 from 43 balls, helping West Indies finish close to the 300-run mark.
Kohli Equals Tendulkar's Record in India
Kohli's latest hundred also added another statistical milestone to his international career.
With his century in Thiruvananthapuram, Kohli reached his 42nd international hundred in India, putting him level with Sachin Tendulkar for the most international centuries scored by a batter in a single country.
The statistic further highlights Kohli's remarkable consistency when playing international cricket on home soil.
Kohli Matches Tendulkar's List A Century Mark
The Thiruvananthapuram hundred was also reported as Kohli's 60th List A century.
List A cricket covers recognised limited-overs matches, including ODIs and officially recognised domestic one-day competitions.

Kohli's achievement puts him level with Tendulkar's tally of 60 List A centuries, another statistical link between two of India's most celebrated batters.
Kohli's 112th ODI Run-Chase Victory
Kohli also added another successful ODI chase to his record.
He has now been involved in 112 ODI victories while chasing, placing him third in the relevant statistical list. Tendulkar leads with 127 such wins, followed by MS Dhoni with 116.
India's latest chase was particularly emphatic, with the hosts reaching 300/2 in only 41.4 overs.
India Take 1-0 Lead in ODI Series
The eight-wicket victory gives India a 1-0 advantage in the three-match ODI series.
The opening match produced centuries from Kohli and Gill, a maiden ODI hundred for Greaves and a four-wicket haul for Kuldeep Yadav.
However, Kohli's unbeaten 139 remained the defining performance of the evening. His combination of the 55th ODI century, 15,000 ODI runs and a career-best nine sixes made the Thiruvananthapuram encounter another significant milestone in his international career.
