Kolkata TMC Rally Erupts in Violence; Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Orchestrating Attack

A Trinamool Congress (TMC) protest rally in Kolkata on Wednesday turned chaotic after clashes broke out between TMC and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters during a demonstration over the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur. The confrontation led to police intervention, traffic disruption, and a fresh political war of words between the state's ruling and opposition parties.

TMC Rally Organised Over Baruipur Minor's Murder

The protest march was organised by the Trinamool Congress after receiving permission from the Calcutta High Court. The rally was intended to demand justice for the 11-year-old girl whose alleged rape and murder has sparked widespread outrage across West Bengal.

Thousands of TMC supporters participated in the march, which passed through several areas of Kolkata before tensions escalated.

BJP Counter-Protest Triggers Confrontation

According to TMC leaders, BJP supporters staged demonstrations along the rally route and raised slogans against the ruling party. TMC workers also alleged that eggs were thrown at the procession, intensifying the confrontation.

The situation reportedly worsened when the rally reached the vicinity of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence, where heated exchanges between rival political workers created chaos.

Police Resort to Lathi-Charge to Restore Order

As clashes spread to multiple locations, police personnel intervened to prevent further violence. Authorities carried out a lathi-charge to disperse the rival groups after the confrontation escalated.

The unrest caused major traffic congestion across several parts of South Kolkata, leaving commuters stranded for hours while security forces worked to restore normalcy.

Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP and Criticises Police

Speaking after the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP had deliberately attempted to disrupt the peaceful protest.

She claimed that several women participants were assaulted, multiple TMC workers sustained injuries, and sections of the police failed to act impartially. The Chief Minister further alleged that law and order in the state had deteriorated and accused some police personnel of behaving like BJP workers during the unrest.

BJP Rejects Allegations, Blames TMC Workers

West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya dismissed Mamata Banerjee's accusations, maintaining that BJP supporters did not prevent the TMC rally from proceeding.

He alleged that the confrontation began after TMC workers provoked BJP supporters, forcing police to intervene with a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.
