CPI(M) state secretary and Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury has raised questions over the law-and-order situation in the state following incidents of firing, clashes and injuries reported during the TTAADC Village Committee elections held on Monday September 28.
Chowdhury criticised the BJP and Tipra Motha while discussing the violence reported from parts of Gomati district during polling. At the same time, he acknowledged that the police and civil administration appeared to be making efforts to conduct the election process impartially.
The remarks came after a largely high-turnout polling day in Tripura's tribal areas was disrupted by isolated incidents, particularly in Gomati district. Reports from the area included the alleged shooting of a Tipra Motha candidate at Warengbari and a separate confrontation near an election strongroom at Gamaria.
Jitendra Chowdhury Questions Tripura Law and Order
Speaking about the incidents, Chowdhury alleged that Tripura's law-and-order situation has deteriorated since the BJP came to power.
However, the Opposition leader also recognised the role of the police and administration in managing the election process. He said attempts to obstruct polling, interfere with election officials or attack government personnel should not be accepted under any circumstances.
Chowdhury called for legal action against anyone found responsible for disrupting the electoral process, irrespective of political identity or affiliation.
His comments come as political parties have exchanged allegations over violence and election-related incidents in different parts of the TTAADC area. The allegations concerning political involvement remain subject to investigation and have not been independently established.
Warengbari Firing During TTAADC Polling
One of the major incidents reported during Monday's polling occurred at Warengbari in Gomati district.
A Tipra Motha Village Committee candidate, identified in reports as Khachindra Reang, was injured after an alleged firing incident while polling was underway. Two other people were also reported injured in connection with the incident. Police subsequently began efforts to determine what happened and identify those responsible.
The shooting triggered political accusations, with competing claims emerging over the identities and affiliations of those allegedly involved.
Chowdhury alleged that people from outside the area arrived in several vehicles and attempted to interfere with polling. He also claimed that vehicle registration details had been recorded and alleged the involvement of BJP supporters.
Those allegations have not been independently verified.
The incident has also prompted demands for an impartial investigation, with Tipra Motha calling for swift action against those responsible for the alleged attack.
Clash Near Gomati Election Strongroom
Another serious development was reported near the election strongroom at Gamaria School in Gomati district.
Government and media reports said Gomati district police officials and other personnel were injured during a confrontation in the area. Reports have differed on the precise circumstances surrounding the incident and the identities of those involved.
The security situation around the strongroom subsequently became a major point of concern because election materials and ballot boxes were being secured there following polling.
The incidents have increased attention on security arrangements during the post-poll period, particularly as authorities prepare for the counting process.
CPI(M) Questions BJP-Tipra Motha Political Equation
Chowdhury also raised questions about the political relationship between the BJP and Tipra Motha while discussing the incidents around the strongroom.
Referring to the presence of BJP supporters near the strongroom, he said that demands for arrests would have to be followed by a police investigation and legal process.
He also questioned whether subsequent action by the police would remain independent of political considerations.
These remarks form part of a wider political dispute surrounding the conduct of the TTAADC Village Committee elections, with different parties making competing claims about election-related disturbances and the response of law-enforcement agencies.
High Voter Turnout Despite Isolated Violence
Despite the incidents reported from Gomati, Chowdhury highlighted the substantial participation of voters as an important feature of the election.
He said large numbers of people turned up at polling stations and participated in the Village Committee elections despite the tensions reported in some areas.
Official and media reports indicated strong voter participation across the tribal areas. The State Election Commission reported that polling was largely peaceful in most areas, although isolated incidents were reported in Gomati district. More than 8,000 voters who were still in queues after the scheduled closing time were reportedly allowed to vote after receiving slips.
The high participation is particularly significant because the Village Committee elections are being held after a prolonged gap, making the exercise an important grassroots electoral event in Tripura's tribal areas.
TTAADC Village Committee Election 2026: What Happened
The TTAADC Village Committee elections were held on September 28 across Tripura's tribal areas. Polling began at 7 am and continued until 4 pm, with voters remaining in queues at several locations beyond the scheduled closing time.
The election covers 587 Village Committees, while thousands of candidates contested seats across the tribal areas. Counting is scheduled for October 5.
The election has attracted significant political attention because the Village Committees represent an important level of grassroots administration within the TTAADC region.

While the overall polling process was described as largely peaceful by officials, incidents of firing, clashes and alleged attacks in parts of Gomati have raised questions about election security and political tensions.
Investigation Into Election Violence Underway
The exact circumstances behind the Warengbari firing and the subsequent confrontation near the Gamaria strongroom remain important areas of investigation.
Political allegations have emerged from multiple sides, but responsibility for individual incidents should be determined through evidence-based investigation rather than political claims.
For the administration, the immediate priorities include maintaining security around election materials, completing the remaining electoral procedures and ensuring that complaints arising from polling are dealt with according to law.
The TTAADC Village Committee election has therefore produced two contrasting developments: strong voter participation across Tripura's tribal areas and isolated episodes of violence that have triggered political controversy over law and order and election security.
