Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth Appointed Next Army Chief of India, To Take Charge on July 1

The Government of India(Ministry of Defence India) has approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS), making him the 31st Army Chief of the Indian Army. He will officially assume command on July 1, following the completion of General Upendra Dwivedi's tenure on June 30.
Currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth is among the most experienced officers in the Indian Army. His elevation to the country's highest military position reflects nearly four decades of distinguished service, leadership, and operational expertise across some of India's most strategically important regions.
Commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986, Dheeraj Seth has held several key command and staff appointments during his military career. He has served extensively in Jammu and Kashmir, the Western Border sector, and desert operational areas, gaining vast experience in national security, defence preparedness, and military operations.
As Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth has played a pivotal role in enhancing military readiness, overseeing operational preparedness, strengthening defence capabilities, and accelerating the induction of advanced technologies within the Indian Army. His responsibilities have also included improving force modernization and ensuring efficient military administration.
The incoming Army Chief previously served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of both the South-Western Command and Southern Command. He is among the few senior officers to have led two major operational commands responsible for safeguarding India's western front. His distinguished career also includes assignments at Army Headquarters, military capability development organizations, and the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Angola.
Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth received his military education from theNational Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. He further enhanced his professional credentials at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, Army War College, Mhow, and the National Defence College, New Delhi.
His international military education includes the General Staff Course in France and the International Defense Acquisition Management Course in the United States. Throughout his career, he has earned several prestigious awards and distinctions, including the Silver Centurion Award and the Best All-Round Student Officer Medal.
Coming from a distinguished military family, Lt Gen Seth is the son of former Adjutant General Lieutenant General Krishna Mohan Seth, who retired from the Indian Army in 1997 after commanding major formations including XXI Strike Corps and III Corps.
Apart from his military accomplishments, Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth is known for his passion for sports, particularly tennis and golf. He is married to Komal Seth.
The appointment of Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth as India's next Army Chief marks a significant leadership transition for the Indian Army at a time when defence modernization, border security, and military preparedness remain top national priorities.
