Manik Saha announced that he will attend the swearing-in ceremonies of the newly formed BJP-led governments in West Bengal and Assam, underlining the political importance of the two events for the Bharatiya Janata Party in eastern and northeastern India.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dr. Saha said he would leave for Kolkata to participate in the oath-taking ceremony of the BJP government in West Bengal, scheduled to be held at the historic Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday.
The swearing-in ceremony in West Bengal is being viewed as a landmark political moment because the BJP is set to form the government in the state for the first time after registering a major victory in the Assembly elections. The development is expected to significantly alter the political landscape of eastern India, where regional parties had dominated for decades.
Dr. Saha’s participation in the event reflects the BJP leadership’s effort to project unity among leaders of BJP-ruled states and strengthen the party’s national political presence following the electoral victory.
Meanwhile, Amit Shah has already reached Kolkata to hold consultations with senior BJP leaders regarding the selection of the new Chief Minister. Party sources indicated that a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs is expected to take place to formally elect the legislature party leader.
The ceremony is likely to witness the presence of several top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Naveen and Chief Ministers from various BJP-ruled states.
Following the West Bengal programme, Dr. Manik Saha is also scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP-led government in Assam on May 12. The Assam event has also generated considerable political interest after the BJP alliance retained power in the state Assembly elections.
According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the Assam ceremony as the chief guest, making it another high-profile political event for the BJP leadership.
