A brutal militant attack in Moirang Tronglaobi late Monday night claimed the lives of two children—a five-year-old boy and a six-month-old infant—after an explosive device tore through their home as they slept beside their mother. The mother sustained injuries in the blast, according to police.
The attack triggered widespread unrest across Bishnupur district on Tuesday morning. Enraged locals set ablaze two oil tankers and a truck near a petrol pump, torched tyres outside the Moirang police station, and vandalized a nearby police outpost.
Tensions escalated sharply when a mob stormed a CRPF camp located barely 100 metres from the blast site. Security forces opened retaliatory fire, leaving two civilians dead and five others injured.
In response to the deteriorating law-and-order situation, the Manipur government imposed a three-day suspension of internet and mobile data services across key districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the injured mother at the hospital, condemning the attack as “barbaric” and “a direct assault on humanity.” He vowed strict action against those responsible, warning that such acts aim to derail the fragile peace in the state.
The incident occurred in a region close to Churachandpur, an area that witnessed repeated gunfire during the ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in 2023–24.
Authorities also recovered another explosive device near Tronglaobi on Tuesday, underscoring ongoing security concerns. Local NPP MLA Shanti Singh condemned the attack as “nothing less than terrorism,” asserting that such inhuman acts have no place in society.
