Manipur Women's Groups, Displaced Families Intensify Protests Over Assembly Session, Delayed Relief

Fresh demonstrations erupted across Manipur on Friday as women activists and internally displaced families separately voiced strong demands for urgent government action on key state issues, including the deteriorating security situation and delayed financial assistance.

A large gathering of members from the women's organisation Imagi Meira assembled outside the Manipur Legislative Assembly premises, urging the authorities to convene a special session of the House without further delay.

Addressing the media, Imagi Meira president Sujata Thokchom said the assembly must immediately deliberate on several pressing concerns affecting the state. She stressed that lawmakers should discuss the ongoing law-and-order challenges as well as adopt a clear position regarding the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

According to her, legislators from both the ruling side and the opposition should put aside political differences and jointly participate in the session to find lasting solutions to the state's prolonged crisis. She expressed concern that the assembly has yet to take any significant step capable of addressing Manipur's complex situation.

Meanwhile, another protest unfolded in Kangpokpi district, where hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) rallied over the non-payment of government financial assistance.

The agitation was led by the Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Welfare Committee, which claimed that thousands of displaced families have been left struggling because the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) funds for July have not been credited.

The committee stated that the monthly assistance is essential for meeting basic family needs, including school admissions and tuition fees for children, purchasing food supplies, medicines, and other day-to-day household expenses.

Protest organisers alleged that despite July coming to a close, none of the registered displaced beneficiaries in the district had received the scheduled financial support.

The committee appealed to the Manipur government to release the pending DBT payments immediately and ensure uninterrupted monthly assistance until every displaced family is safely rehabilitated. It also called for a transparent and fixed timetable for the regular disbursement of relief funds to prevent future delays.

Women Activists Call for Immediate Manipur Assembly Session

Members of Imagi Meira, a prominent women's organisation, gathered outside the Manipur Legislative Assembly complex in Imphal, urging the government to convene the Assembly without further delay.

Speaking to journalists, Imagi Meira president Sujata Thokchom said the House must urgently deliberate on critical matters, including the deteriorating law and order situation and the future of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

She appealed to legislators from both the ruling and opposition parties to rise above political divisions and jointly work toward restoring peace and stability in the conflict-hit state.

According to her, the Assembly has yet to take meaningful legislative steps capable of addressing Manipur's continuing crisis.

Displaced Families Protest Over Delayed DBT Assistance

Meanwhile, hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) staged a separate demonstration in Kangpokpi district, demanding the immediate release of delayed government financial assistance.

The protest, organised by the Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Welfare Committee, highlighted the hardships faced by thousands of families who have not received their July Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) payments.

The committee said the monthly financial support is essential for paying school admission fees, purchasing food, medicines, and meeting other household expenses.

Protesters alleged that despite July ending, no registered displaced family in the district had received the scheduled assistance.
