Manipur Search Operation: Security Forces Intensify Hunt in Ukhrul After Deadly Assam Rifles Ambush

A massive joint search operation is underway in Manipur Manipur's Ukhrul district as security agencies intensify efforts to apprehend the militants responsible for the deadly ambush that claimed the lives of two Assam Rifles personnel earlier this week.

The coordinated operation, launched on Friday, involves the Assam Rifles, the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Manipur Police. Security forces have spread across the Nungshang area, carrying out extensive combing operations in residential localities, vulnerable road corridors, and surrounding forests.

Security Forces Expand Search Across Sensitive Areas

According to an official statement released on Saturday, the objective of the operation is to trace those behind the attack, recover hidden weapons and ammunition, and maintain security for residents living in vulnerable villages.

Officials said search teams are thoroughly scanning strategic locations and suspected hideouts as part of an ongoing mission to prevent further militant activity in the region.

Two Assam Rifles Personnel Killed in July 6 Ambush

The intensified operation follows the deadly attack on an Assam Rifles convoy in the Nungshong Khong area under Ukhrul Police Station on July 6.

Suspected militants opened fire on the convoy, killing Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar CM Singh while they were on operational duty.

The incident has prompted security agencies to step up surveillance and launch one of the largest coordinated search operations in the district in recent months.

Assam Rifles Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Justice

In a statement shared on X, Assam Rifles said the joint operation demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the security forces to restore peace, maintain law and order, and ensure that those responsible for the ambush are brought to justice.

The force confirmed that intensive combing operations remain in progress.

NSCN-IM Denies Role in the Attack

Meanwhile, the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) (NSCN-IM) denied any involvement in the Ukhrul ambush.

In its statement, the organisation reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire agreement with the Central Government and said it continues to support the ongoing peace dialogue.

The group also urged all stakeholders to avoid actions that could disrupt the peace process or destabilize the region.

Ethnic Violence Continues to Challenge Manipur

Security forces have maintained continuous search operations and area domination exercises across vulnerable parts of Manipur since ethnic violence erupted nearly three years ago.

The prolonged conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has resulted in the deaths of more than 260 people while forcing thousands of families to flee their homes, making it one of the most serious security crises in Northeast India.
