Manipur Violence: Child Among Two Injured in Kangpokpi Firing, NH-37 Shutdown Called by Kuki Body

Fresh violence has once again gripped Manipur's Kangpokpi district, where unidentified armed assailants allegedly opened fire on civilians in Thingkhongjang village. According to police, two people, including an eight-year-old girl, sustained injuries during the attack, prompting heightened security measures in the region by Home department.

The injured have been identified as Nengneichong Kipgen (56) and Lamneingah Kipgen (8). Both were first given emergency medical assistance at an Assam Rifles camp before being shifted overnight to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, for specialized treatment.

Following their admission, security around the RIMS campus has been significantly strengthened to prevent any untoward incident.

Fresh Tension Revives Memories of Earlier Hospital Protests

The latest firing comes just weeks after unrest erupted at RIMS in June when three injured Kuki youths were brought to the hospital following another gunfight in Kangpokpi district. Protesters had then attempted to enter the hospital, alleging that the injured were armed militants.

The renewed violence has further intensified concerns over the fragile law and order situation in the hill district.

Kuki Organisations Blame Militant Groups

The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex social body of the Kuki community, strongly condemned Sunday's attack. In its statement, the organisation alleged that cadres of NSCN (IM) and ZUF (Kamson) were responsible for the firing.

However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and security agencies have not issued any official confirmation regarding those claims.

24-Hour NH-37 Shutdown Announced

In response to the attack, the Kuki CSO Working Committee (KCWC), South West Sadar Hills, announced an immediate 24-hour total shutdown along National Highway-37, one of Manipur's most crucial transport corridors.

The committee described the incident as a brutal assault on innocent civilians, claiming that the attack occurred while villagers had gathered for Sunday church services. It alleged that several people, including women and children, suffered injuries during the indiscriminate firing.

Demand for Probe and Accountability

The KCWC also questioned the effectiveness of security deployment in the area, alleging that forces stationed nearby failed to prevent the attack despite their presence. These allegations remain unverified, and there has been no official response from the security establishment.

The organisation demanded:

  • Immediate arrest of those responsible.
  • A fair, transparent and time-bound investigation.
  • Emergency medical and relief assistance for victims.
  • Enhanced security in Thingkhongjang and surrounding villages.

Additionally, the committee announced it would suspend cooperation with the 86 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) until accountability is fixed over the alleged security lapse.

Government Yet to Respond

As of Monday evening, neither the Manipur Government nor security agencies had issued any official statement addressing the allegations or the demands raised by the Kuki organisations.
