Manipur Violence: Massive Protest in Imphal Demands Justice for Six Naga Civilians Killed in Leilon Vaiphei

A large-scale peace demonstration was organized in Manipur capital on Saturday as hundreds of people marched through Imphal demanding justice for six Naga civilians who were allegedly abducted and killed in Leilon Vaiphei village of Kangpokpi district. The protest highlighted growing concerns over law and order, public safety, and the handling of the case by authorities.
ANSAM Organizes Protest Against Leilon Vaiphei Killings
The rally was organized by the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) under the banner of seeking justice for the victims of the Leilon Vaiphei incident. Organizers described the march as a peaceful movement aimed at drawing government attention to the tragic killings and ensuring accountability.
The procession began from Tangkhul Baptist Church in Imphal and moved through key areas, including Khuyathong, before concluding at Mao Market. Participants carried banners, placards, and raised slogans calling for justice, peace, and stronger security measures in Manipur.
Protesters Demand Strong Government Action
During the rally, demonstrators urged the state and central governments to take immediate steps against those responsible for the deaths of the six civilians. Protesters also called for enhanced security arrangements and a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Several participants criticized the existing political and security response, claiming that adequate action had not been taken despite the seriousness of the case.
Calls to Revoke Suspension of Operations Agreement
One of the major demands raised during the protest was the cancellation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement involving Kuki militant groups. Protesters argued that the arrangement should be reviewed to prevent further violence and ensure lasting peace in the region.
The gathering also demanded the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, alleging connections between her family and KNF-P. These allegations have not been officially confirmed.
ANSAM Questions Slow Progress in Investigation
Speaking to media personnel, ANSAM President Anteshang Maring said the protest reflected the concerns of affected families and communities seeking justice. He alleged that the six civilians had been kidnapped from Leilon Vaiphei and held captive for more than 20 days before being killed.
Maring further claimed that more than a month after the abduction, no arrests had been made in connection with the case. He questioned the pace of the investigation and urged authorities to expedite legal action against those responsible.
Demand for Inquiry Into KNF-P's Alleged Role
The ANSAM leader alleged that KNF-P was involved in the abduction and killings. He stated that ANSAM and the United Naga Council were demanding a thorough investigation into the group's alleged activities and seeking legal action under relevant laws.
He further said that if evidence establishes the group's involvement, authorities should consider designating it as a terrorist organization.
No Official Response Yet
As of the filing of this report, government authorities had not issued any official statement regarding the demands raised by protesters. The incident continues to draw attention across Manipur, with civil society groups and local organizations calling for justice, transparency, and peace.
