Maradona Death Trial Resumes in Argentina

The investigation into the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona is set to resume on Tuesday, with seven members of his medical team facing trial on charges of culpable homicide. The case centers on allegations of negligence and inadequate medical care during the final days of the iconic player’s life.

The initial trial, which began in May 2025, was annulled after controversy arose when one of the judges was accused of allowing a documentary to be filmed inside the courtroom without proper authorization. As a result, the proceedings will restart before a new panel of judges.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, Maradona led Argentina to victory in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, a tournament remembered for his extraordinary performances, including the famous “Hand of God” goal against England.

Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60. He had been recovering at his home following surgery to remove a brain blood clot. A postmortem examination determined that he died from a heart attack, accompanied by acute pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs).

Allegations of Medical Negligence

Prosecutors allege that Maradona’s medical team was aware of his critical condition but failed to provide adequate treatment. Medical experts involved in the investigation described his care as “negligent and inadequate.” If convicted, the accused face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.

The trial is expected to include testimony from approximately 100 witnesses, including Maradona’s daughters, and is likely to continue until July.
