Meghalaya Encounter: Four Suspected Gang Members Killed Near Songsak

Four suspected members of an alleged interstate criminal gang were killed during an early-morning encounter with Meghalaya Police near Songsak in East Garo Hills district on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The incident occurred at around 4 am when police personnel were conducting an operation in the Songsak area following information about the suspected presence of armed criminals.
According to preliminary reports, the suspects allegedly opened fire at the police during the operation, following which the security personnel retaliated. Four men were subsequently killed in the exchange of fire.
Police Probe Suspected Assam-Meghalaya Crime Links
Investigators suspect that the group could have been involved in multiple criminal incidents reported across Meghalaya and Assam. Police are examining the backgrounds of the deceased and their possible connections with earlier cases.
