Meghalaya Landslide Disrupts Shillong-Dawki Road, Traffic Suspended Beyond Laitlyngkot

A massive landslide on the Shillong-Dawki Road in Meghalaya has brought traffic movement to a complete halt beyond Laitlyngkot village in East Khasi Hills district. The incident occurred at Chainage 25+200, severing road connectivity and leaving a key stretch of the highway inaccessible. The Shillong-Dawki route is an important link for both local commuters and tourists travelling to the popular border town of Dawki.
Authorities Suspend Vehicular Movement
Following the landslide, the East Khasi Hills district administration ordered the immediate suspension of all vehicular and public movement on the affected stretch from Laitlyngkot village onwards. Officials said the restriction has been imposed to ensure public safety and to facilitate restoration activities in the damaged area.
NHIDCL Begins Restoration Work
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has started repair and restoration work on the damaged section of the highway. However, authorities have indicated that due to the severity of the damage, restoration is likely to take several days. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear debris and restore connectivity at the earliest.
Travellers Advised to Avoid Route
The district administration has urged commuters, residents and tourists to avoid travelling on the Shillong-Dawki Road beyond Laitlyngkot until further notice. People have been advised to monitor official updates and follow advisories issued by the administration regarding the reopening of the highway.
Restrictions to Continue Until Further Notice
Officials stated that the closure order will remain in effect until the affected stretch is fully repaired and declared safe for traffic movement.
