Mirabai Chanu Wins India's First Gold at Commonwealth Games 2026 with Record Lift, Creates History

Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu delivered another unforgettable performance by winning India's first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, rewriting the record books in the women's 48kg weightlifting event. The Manipur star lifted a combined 190kg (85kg Snatch + 105kg Clean & Jerk) to establish a new Commonwealth Games record and secure her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal.

The victory further cements Chanu's legacy as one of India's greatest weightlifters. She previously captured Commonwealth Games gold medals at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, after beginning her CWG medal journey with a silver at Glasgow 2014.

Rishikant Singh and Raja Muthupandi Add Silver Medals

India's medal tally received another boost as Rishikant Singh secured silver in the men's 60kg category after lifting a total of 264kg (121kg + 143kg).

In the men's 65kg division, Raja Muthupandi also finished with silver after recording an impressive 289kg total.

Earlier, Jhandu Kumar contributed India's first para-powerlifting bronze medal of the Games.

With these performances, India has collected four medals—one gold, two silver and one bronze—and currently occupies seventh place in the overall medal standings, while Australia continues to lead the table.

Rishikant Singh's Rise from Manipur to International Success

According to Brojendro Singh, Secretary of the Manipur Weightlifting Association and Rishikant's first coach, the weightlifter began training at the Manipur Sports Academy in 2009.

His talent later earned him admission to a Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centre before joining the Indian Navy. He eventually became part of the Indian Army's sports programme, where he continued his development into an international medal contender.

India's Weightlifting Campaign at Commonwealth Games 2026

India entered the 2026 Commonwealth Games with 11 weightlifting quota places, reduced from 16 after anti-doping rule violations impacted qualification numbers. The Indian squad also missed experienced lifter Dilbag Singh, who withdrew due to a back injury.

However, the country's weightlifters have continued to perform strongly, building on their impressive 10-medal haul at Birmingham 2022, where India won three gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

Why Mirabai Chanu's Gold Matters

Mirabai Chanu's latest triumph not only opens India's gold medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games but also reinforces her reputation as one of the most dominant athletes in Commonwealth weightlifting history. Her consistency across three consecutive editions reflects India's growing strength in international weightlifting and provides a major boost to the nation's medal campaign in Glasgow.
