Results of Assembly by-elections across seven constituencies in five states have produced a mixed political outcome, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (Congress) sharing gains, while regional players also made their presence felt.
The BJP secured victories in Gujarat, Tripura and Nagaland, and is leading in one constituency in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Congress won two seats in Karnataka.
In Tripura’s Dharmanagar seat, BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty defeated Amitabha Datta of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of 18,290 votes.
In Nagaland, BJP’s Daochier I Imchen won the Koridang Assembly seat, defeating independent candidate Toshikaba by 3,123 votes.
In Gujarat’s Umreth constituency, BJP’s Harshadbhai Govindbhai Parmar registered a landslide victory with a margin of 30,743 votes.
The Congress performed strongly in Karnataka. In Bagalkot, Umesh Hullappa Meti won by over 22,000 votes. In Davangere South, Samarth Shamanur Mallikarjun defeated BJP’s Shrinivasa T. Dasakariyappa by more than 5,000 votes.
In Maharashtra, BJP ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is leading in one seat, while in Rahuri, BJP’s Akshay Shivajirao Kardile defeated NCP candidate Mokate Govind Khandu by a margin exceeding 1.12 lakh votes.
In the high-profile Baramati seat, NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar is maintaining a massive lead of over two lakh votes.
Overall, the bypoll results reflect a competitive political landscape, with both national parties and regional forces securing significant victories across states.
