Mizoram Battles TB Crisis: 71 Deaths, Over 1,000 New Cases Reported in Just Six Months

Mizoram has recorded 71 tuberculosis (TB) )-related deaths and detected 1,087 fresh cases during the first six months of 2026, underlining the persistent public health challenge posed by the disease in the northeastern state.

Extensive Screening Drive Detects Over 1,000 Cases

According to official data, health authorities screened 61,246 individuals suspected of having tuberculosis between January and June this year. The large-scale screening exercise led to the detection of 1,087 confirmed TB cases across the state.

State TB Officer Zochhuanawmi said that among the total patients diagnosed, 600 were men. The disease also affected children, with 68 confirmed cases reported among those below 14 years of age.

Treatment Success Rate Crosses 86 Percent

Officials said that 71 patients succumbed to tuberculosis during the January-June period. Despite the fatalities, Mizoram achieved a treatment success rate of 86.49 percent, indicating the effectiveness of ongoing healthcare interventions and disease management programmes.

Health authorities have emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and uninterrupted treatment in reducing TB -related deaths and improving recovery rates.

Ministers and Officials Extend Nutritional Assistance

In an effort to improve patient recovery and ensure proper nutrition, ministers, MLAs and government officials have been providing food baskets and nutritional support to 374 TB patients under various welfare initiatives.

The nutritional assistance programme forms part of broader efforts to support patients throughout their treatment journey and enhance treatment outcomes.

Call for More Donors to Support TB Patients

However, State TB Officer Zochhuanawmi expressed concern that only around 28 percent of patients currently undergoing treatment are receiving donor support.

She stressed the urgent need for more individuals, social organisations and institutions to come forward and assist TB patients, particularly by providing nutritional support, which plays a crucial role in successful treatment and recovery.

Health experts maintain that community participation, adequate nutrition and timely medical care remain key pillars in Mizoram's fight against tuberculosis.
