Mizoram Rajya Sabha Election 2026: ZPM Candidate Favoured as BJP, Congress Skip Voting

Voting for Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha seat will take place on Thursday, June 18, with the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) and the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) locked in a direct electoral battle. The election has drawn significant political attention after both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress decided to abstain from the voting process.

Polling and Counting Schedule Announced

According to officials of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Secretariat, polling will be conducted at the Assembly building in Aizawl from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The counting of votes is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM, and the final result is expected later in the evening.

Lalthangmawia, Additional Secretary of the Assembly Secretariat, confirmed that all security, logistical and administrative arrangements have been completed to ensure smooth conduct of the Rajya Sabha election.

ZPM vs MNF in Straight Contest

The election will determine Mizoram's representative in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament. The ruling ZPM has nominated party spokesperson K. Laltluangkima, while the MNF has fielded advocate and noted writer Zothansangi Hmar.

With the BJP and Congress staying away from the voting process, the contest has effectively turned into a straight fight between the ZPM and the MNF.

BJP and Congress to Abstain

Congress MLA C. Ngunlianchunga has confirmed that he will abstain from voting following instructions from the party leadership. Similarly, BJP media convener Johny Lalthanpuia stated that the party's two MLAs would also refrain from casting their votes.

The decision by both national parties has significantly altered the electoral dynamics and strengthened the ruling party's prospects.

ZPM Holds Strong Numerical Advantage

Political analysts believe the ZPM enters the election as the clear favourite due to its dominant position in the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly. The ruling party currently enjoys the support of 27 legislators, while the MNF has 10 members. The BJP has two MLAs and the Congress has one.

Given the existing numbers, observers expect the ZPM candidate to have a substantial edge in securing victory.

Mizoram Rajya Sabha Election Result Expected Today

The outcome of the Mizoram Rajya Sabha Election 2026 is likely to be declared shortly after the completion of vote counting on Thursday evening. Political circles across the state are closely watching the contest as it will determine who represents Mizoram in Parliament's Upper House.
