Mob Attacks Assam Rifles Camp in Manipur, Security Vehicles Burnt

Tension gripped Manipur's Senapati district after an angry mob allegedly attacked an Assam Rifles camp late Tuesday night, damaging several security vehicles and setting one on fire. The incident occurred shortly after the paramilitary force carried out an intelligence-led search operation targeting suspected insurgent activity.
According to Defence officials, Assam Rifles launched an area domination patrol and search mission based on credible intelligence inputs indicating the movement of armed insurgents in Makuilongdi, located nearly two kilometres west of the designated NSCN (I-M) camp at Oklong.
Search Operation Triggered by Intelligence Inputs
A Defence spokesperson said intelligence reports, supported by information circulating on social media, suggested that armed cadres had moved outside their designated camps carrying sophisticated weapons while wearing combat uniforms. Officials believe such movements violated the Ceasefire Ground Rules governing the ceasefire agreement.

The matter was immediately reported to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG), the authority responsible for monitoring compliance with ceasefire provisions between security agencies and insurgent groups.
Residents Block Security Personnel
During the operation, local residents, including several women, reportedly prevented Assam Rifles personnel from advancing toward Makuilongdi and Oklong villages.
Security officials said the troops maintained maximum restraint and held discussions with community leaders, assuring them that the operation was intended solely to maintain peace and security. The forces also informed residents that they would not enter any village without approval from the competent authorities.

Mob Turns Violent, Vehicles Damaged
Despite the withdrawal of the security columns, tensions escalated rapidly in Senapati town.
At around 9 p.m., a large crowd gathered and marched toward the Assam Rifles camp at Naga Taphou. By approximately 9:30 p.m., the crowd allegedly began pelting stones, vandalising government property and attempting to set parts of the camp on fire.
Officials confirmed that one Assam Rifles light vehicle was completely burnt, two military trucks were overturned and severely damaged, while a civilian-owned car was also destroyed during the violence.
Joint Security Response Restores Order
Assam Rifles personnel, working in coordination with the Manipur Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), used minimum force to disperse the violent crowd and bring the situation under control.
District authorities later confirmed that peace had been restored in Senapati and that no civilians or security personnel sustained injuries during the incident.
Earlier Attack on Assam Rifles Patrol
The latest violence comes just days after another deadly attack on security forces in Manipur.
On July 6, unidentified militants ambushed an Assam Rifles patrol in Ukhrul district, killing two personnel and injuring several others. Ukhrul, which borders Senapati, is widely regarded as the political stronghold of the NSCN (I-M), an insurgent organisation that has remained under a ceasefire agreement with the Government of India since 1997.
