Modi, Mamata Trade Barbs in Bengal Campaign

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed a series of election rallies across West Bengal, intensifying the political battle with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Prime Minister spoke at rallies in Katwa, Jangipur, and Kushmandi, targeting the TMC’s governance and accusing it of corruption and misrule.

“People Will Shatter TMC’s Arrogance”

Addressing supporters, Modi asserted that Bengal has historically resisted domination.
“Since independence, the arrogance of anyone who dared to challenge Bengal has been shattered—first the British, then the Congress, and finally the Left. Now, the people of Bengal will shatter the arrogance of the TMC,” he said.

Mamata Banerjee Hits Back

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee countered the Prime Minister’s remarks during her rallies in Jhargram and Keshyari. She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being “anti-Bengal” and urged voters to reject the party.

“The BJP is anti-Bengal. Don’t let them enter your home,” Banerjee declared. She also alleged that the BJP attempted to cancel her candidacy from Bhawanipur by filing two false affidavits.

Key Highlights from PM Modi’s Rallies

Katwa, Purba Bardhaman

  • Modi stated that “Bengal is ready for change,” claiming that illegal infiltrators should “start packing their bags.”
  • He assured voters that a BJP government would continue existing welfare schemes but would end what he described as “corruption and plunder” under the TMC.
  • The Prime Minister added that the massive turnout at BJP rallies signaled the likely outcome of the May 4 election results.

Jangipur, Murshidabad

  • Modi described the BJP’s manifesto as a “roadmap” to end what he termed the TMC’s “jungle raj” in the state.
  • He emphasized that once Bengal resolves to bring about change, “no power in the world can stop it.”

Kushmandi, Dakshin Dinajpur

  • The Prime Minister accused the TMC of making personal attacks against him while failing to account for its governance over the past 15 years.
  • “They level false allegations but do not explain what they have done for Bengal. They have neither the intention nor the policies,” he said.

Reference to Football Controversy

Modi also revisited remarks he made in Kolkata in December regarding a controversy linked to football management in the state. Referring to global football icon Lionel Messi, he alleged that the TMC had handed over football administration to a “syndicate,” leading to what he described as “shameful scenes” witnessed by the world.

Conclusion

The exchange of sharp rhetoric between the BJP and the TMC underscores the intensifying political contest in West Bengal. As both Narendra Modi and Mamata Banerjee continue to mobilize support through rallies across the state, the upcoming elections are shaping up to be a closely watched and fiercely contested battle.
