Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has tested positive for a banned substance, with the sample reportedly collected during the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally notified the Pakistan Cricket Board, which has initiated its own investigation into the matter.
A PCB spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday:
"The ICC has informed us of the matter, and the PCB has initiated the process. The results will be reported to the ICC today. The investigation is ongoing, and a final decision has not yet been made."
The case is being handled under the ICC’s anti-doping framework.
Reports indicate the positive test is linked to recreational drug use. The ICC has not issued an official statement, and proceedings remain confidential at this stage.
World Cup participation under shadow
The 32-year-old featured in all seven matches for Pakistan during the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, where the team exited at the Super 8 stage. Nawaz scored 15 runs and picked up seven wickets in the tournament.
County deal collapses
The controversy has already begun to affect his professional commitments. Nawaz was set to join Surrey County Cricket Club for the T20 Blast, with a No Objection Certificate (NOC) cleared by the PCB. However, the deal has now been scrapped, and he will not feature for the club this season. Surrey has not commented publicly.
Continues to play PSL
Despite the ongoing probe, Nawaz has continued to play in the Pakistan Super League, representing Multan Sultans. In a recent match against Rawalpindi team in Karachi, he bowled three overs without taking a wicket.
Career at stake
Nawaz, who has played 98 T20 Internationals for Pakistan, remains a key figure in the white-ball setup, valued for his left-arm spin and lower-order batting.
If found guilty of violating anti-doping regulations, he could face suspension or other disciplinary sanctions under ICC rules. The final outcome will depend on the completion of the ongoing investigation.
