NEC 73rd Plenary Session Begins in Shillong: Amit Shah Leads Key Discussions on Northeast Development and Connectivity

The 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council North Eastern Council (NEC)  commenced in Shillong on Thursday with Union Home Minister Amit Shah presiding over the high-level deliberations aimed at accelerating development across Northeast India.

The two-day NEC meeting, being held at the State Convention Centre in Meghalaya’s capital , has brought together chief ministers, governors and senior administrators from all eight northeastern states to discuss critical issues related to infrastructure expansion, regional connectivity, economic growth, tourism promotion, power generation, education and inter-state cooperation.

The annual plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council serves as the highest regional policy forum for Northeast India and plays a crucial role in shaping development strategies under the  Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER)

Leaders from Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim are participating in the discussions, which focus on reviewing the progress of ongoing projects and identifying new opportunities for sustainable growth and investment.

According to officials, the plenary session is expected to examine measures for strengthening transportation networks, improving digital and physical connectivity, attracting investments, creating employment opportunities and enhancing coordination among northeastern states.

A significant agenda item includes reviewing recommendations submitted by sector-specific task forces that were constituted to identify growth potential and address developmental bottlenecks in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, sports, infrastructure and investment promotion.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the importance of regional collaboration and coordinated implementation of development initiatives aimed at transforming the Northeast into a major economic growth hub.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared updates from the plenary session on social media platform X, describing Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the “Architect of Peace in Modern India” while highlighting the collective commitment of northeastern states toward development and stability.

Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia also reaffirmed the shared vision of building a stronger and more prosperous Northeast through coordinated policymaking and accelerated implementation of strategic projects.

The North Eastern Council, functioning under the DoNER Ministry, continues to play a pivotal role in planning, financing and monitoring developmental initiatives designed to ensure balanced, inclusive and sustainable progress throughout the northeastern region (Invest India – Northeast Opportunities)
