Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that he will place a comprehensive tourism strategy before the upcoming North Eastern Council (https://necouncil.gov.in)plenary session, advocating for the Northeast to be promoted as one integrated travel destination rather than eight separate markets.
As chairman of the regional tourism task force, Sangma said the proposal focuses on creating a common tourism identity for the Northeast and encouraging all participating states to jointly showcase the region's unique attractions to visitors from India and abroad.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the NEC gathering scheduled for June 4, the chief minister stressed that coordinated promotion across the region would generate greater visibility and help unlock substantial growth opportunities for the tourism sector (https://tourism.gov.in)
He noted that the plan seeks to present the entire Northeast as a unified tourism hub, enabling states to benefit from shared marketing efforts and complementary tourism assets.
The annual NEC plenary meeting will be chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by governors and chief ministers of the northeastern states. The meeting is expected to focus on a range of developmental issues affecting the region. Shah is scheduled to reach Shillong on Wednesday evening.
According to Sangma, considerable attention during the session will be devoted to recommendations prepared by various sectoral task forces established by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) under the leadership of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
These panels were created to examine key sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, trade, and youth affairs. Each task force is headed by a chief minister and includes representatives from several northeastern states, fostering a collaborative approach to regional planning.
Sangma said the states have worked collectively to formulate proposals aimed at accelerating economic and social progress across the Northeast. He also acknowledged Scindia's role in driving the initiative and encouraging inter-state cooperation.
The chief minister explained that the plenary's primary objective would be to evaluate the task force recommendations and determine practical steps for implementing them in the coming months.
Beyond the sector-specific reports, the meeting is also expected to address broader issues related to the long-term growth and development of the Northeast region.
Meanwhile, Sangma revealed that Meghalaya (https://www.meghalaya.gov.in) will host several senior members of the Union Cabinet in the coming weeks. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda is slated to visit Shillong on June 5, while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to arrive in the state later this month for official engagements.
