Nepal Floods: 903 Deaths, 4,247 Missing So Far

Nepal’s devastating floods and landslides have killed 903 people and left 4,247 missing, as rescue teams race to reach hundreds of workers feared trapped inside hydropower tunnels. The disaster has also claimed 16 lives in Tibet, taking the reported death toll across Nepal and Tibet to 919.
Authorities have begun burying unidentified victims as the recovery operation expands. In Chitwan’s Devghat area, hundreds of graves have been prepared, with unidentified remains being documented and assigned identification numbers. DNA testing is expected to help establish the identities of victims and facilitate the eventual handover of remains to their families.
The condition of many recovered bodies has made identification particularly difficult. Prolonged exposure to floodwater has caused severe decomposition, prompting authorities to rely increasingly on forensic examination and DNA profiling.
Rescue Teams Search Hydropower Tunnels
A major search-and-rescue operation is underway at several hydropower projects where workers remain unaccounted for following the catastrophic flooding. Nepal’s disaster authorities have identified 933 people connected to hydropower projects among those missing, while rescue teams continue efforts to gain access to tunnels buried under mud, rocks and other debris.
The Trishuli-3A hydropower project is among the key locations being targeted. Excavators, heavy machinery, search equipment and other specialised resources are being deployed to clear blocked entrances.
Nepali security personnel are working alongside specialists from India and China. Rescue teams are attempting to establish contact with people inside the underground structures, although access remains extremely difficult because of the massive volume of debris.
Nepal-China Trade Route Badly Damaged
The floods have also caused extensive destruction along the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border corridor, an important commercial connection between Nepal and China. Damage to the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge, border infrastructure and parts of Timure has severely affected movement through the area.
The disruption is significant for Nepal’s trade because the route is a major entry point for Chinese merchandise. With transportation links damaged, traders are facing delays and additional logistical difficulties.

Barrier Lake Threat Eases
Meanwhile, concern over a barrier lake near the Nepal-Tibet frontier has temporarily eased after much of its stored water drained naturally.
The lake emerged near the confluence of the Chochen Khola and China’s Purpu Tsangpo River after a glacier collapse. The resulting water body was estimated to have contained around 2 million cubic metres of water.
The natural drainage has reduced the immediate threat of a sudden downstream flood caused by a catastrophic lake outburst.
India Sends Forensic and Tunnel Rescue Experts
India has stepped up assistance to Nepal by deploying specialist teams for both forensic identification and tunnel rescue operations.
A 19-member Indian forensic team has reached Kathmandu and started assisting Nepalese authorities with DNA-related procedures aimed at identifying victims recovered from the disaster.
Indian tunnel-rescue specialists have also joined the Nepal Army’s efforts at the Chilime and Langtang hydropower projects. Earlier reports had put the number of workers unaccounted for at around 898, although Nepal’s latest official figures indicate that 933 people linked to hydropower projects remain missing.
The catastrophe, which struck on August 26 after a major ice, rock and debris event along the Nepal-Tibet border, has overwhelmed rescue teams and severely damaged settlements, infrastructure and hydropower facilities. Search operations remain focused on locating survivors, recovering victims and reopening access to isolated areas.
