Nepal is facing a fresh weather emergency as relentless rainfall triggers floods, landslides and rising river levels across several parts of the country. At least six people have died in rain-related disasters, while roads, bridges, homes, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure have suffered damage.
The latest spell of heavy rain has severely affected communities in western and central Nepal. Major highways have been disrupted by landslides and flooding, while authorities are carrying out evacuations in vulnerable settlements.
At the same time, a separate avalanche at Himlung Himal in Manang district has left 10 climbers and expedition support staff unaccounted for, adding to the mounting emergency in the Himalayan nation.
Six Killed as Floods and Landslides Hit Nepal
Baglung has reported one of the deadliest incidents during the latest rainfall. A landslide buried a house in Nisi Khola Rural Municipality, killing a woman and her three sons.
Two more deaths were reported from Palpa district in separate landslide incidents. Rescue teams and security personnel have been deployed in affected locations as authorities continue assessing the damage.
Several other people have also been reported missing in rain-related incidents, highlighting the continuing risks in landslide-prone areas.
Major Highways Blocked by Floods and Landslides
The prolonged rainfall has badly affected road connectivity across Nepal.
Landslides have obstructed sections of the Prithvi Highway, Narayangadh-Muglin road and Karnali Corridor, while other highways and local roads have also been affected.
The swollen Kaligandaki River has swept away bridges in some areas, cutting road links and making movement difficult. In Parbat district, flooding has forced residents from vulnerable settlements to move to safer locations.
The disruption has created additional challenges for emergency teams trying to reach communities affected by floods and landslides.
Narayani River Crosses Danger Level
Water levels in several major rivers have risen rapidly following continuous rainfall.
The Narayani River at Devghat crossed its danger level, prompting authorities to issue warnings to people living close to riverbanks and other low-lying areas.
Flooding has already affected settlements in parts of Chitwan and Nawalparasi, while officials are monitoring river levels closely because continued rainfall could increase the threat of further inundation.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and move to safer locations if flood conditions worsen.
Butwal Flooding Forces Residents to Evacuate
Butwal has also been affected by rising water levels and flooding.
Several houses have been damaged or swept away in areas along the Tinau River, while hundreds of residents have been moved from vulnerable locations as a precaution.
Authorities and security personnel are continuing evacuation and relief efforts, particularly in areas where floodwater poses a direct threat to homes and communities.
Hydropower Generation Hit by Flood Damage
Nepal's hydropower infrastructure has also come under pressure because of the extreme weather.
Flooding and swollen rivers have disrupted operations at hydropower facilities, while transmission infrastructure has suffered damage in several locations.
The Kaligandaki A Hydropower Project, for example, temporarily halted electricity generation after authorities opened its gates because of increased river inflows. Damage to bridges, transmission networks and other infrastructure has added to the impact of the disaster.
Agricultural land has also been inundated in several locations, raising concerns over crop losses and further economic damage for affected communities.
10 Missing After Avalanche Hits Himlung Himal
A separate mountain emergency has unfolded in Manang district, where an avalanche struck Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre peak in the Nar Phu area.
Ten people, including expedition support staff, are currently unaccounted for following the avalanche.

Rishi Bhandari, general secretary of the Expedition Operators Association Nepal, confirmed the incident. According to information provided by the association, two missing people are associated with Imagine Nepal, while eight are linked to Himalayan Holidays Nepal.
The avalanche occurred amid persistent rainfall and snowfall in Nepal's mountain regions.
Tourism Department Monitors Rescue Efforts
Nepal's Department of Tourism is monitoring the Himlung Himal incident and gathering additional information about the missing expedition personnel.
Director General Ram Krishna Lamichhane said officials were closely following developments and working to establish further details regarding the situation and possible rescue efforts.
The difficult weather conditions are complicating operations in the mountainous region.
Nepal Faces Multiple Weather-Related Emergencies
The combination of heavy rainfall, rising rivers, landslides and the Himlung Himal avalanche has created multiple emergency situations across Nepal.
Authorities are continuing evacuation, rescue and damage-assessment operations while warning people living near rivers, steep slopes and other vulnerable locations to remain cautious.
With rainfall continuing in several parts of the country, officials are closely monitoring river levels, road conditions and mountain areas for further risks.
The latest disaster has once again highlighted Nepal's vulnerability to floods, landslides and avalanches during periods of intense rainfall and changing severe mountain weather.
