Child Protection Authorities Take Custody of Infant After Local Residents Alert Police
A shocking incident from Kanchanmala Muslimpara under Amtali Police Station in West Tripura has triggered widespread concern after allegations surfaced that a newborn baby girl was allegedly handed over to individuals in neighbouring Assam in exchange for money.
Acting on complaints lodged by local residents, a joint team comprising Amtali Police and officials of the District Child Protection Unit rescued the infant and placed her under government protection. The incident has sparked intense reactions across the locality, with residents demanding a thorough investigation.
Financial Hardship Allegedly Behind Child Transfer
According to sources, the parents of the infant had reportedly been facing severe financial difficulties for a prolonged period. It has been alleged that the couple handed over their youngest daughter to a person residing in the Bazarichhara area of Karimganj district in Assam.

The alleged transfer came to light after information spread among local residents, who subsequently informed the district administration, Childline authorities and the police.
Police Launch Investigation Following Complaint
Following the complaint, Amtali Police initiated an inquiry into the matter. On Tuesday morning, officials recovered the infant and brought her to the police station.
Later, representatives from the West Tripura District Child Protection Department arrived at the police station, completed all mandatory legal procedures and formally assumed custody of the child.

Authorities stated that further decisions regarding the child's future welfare will be taken in accordance with the directions of the Child Welfare Committee.
Mother Denies Selling Child, Cites Economic Crisis
While interacting with media personnel, the child's mother denied allegations that she had sold her baby. However, she admitted that the infant had been handed over to an individual in Assam due to acute financial constraints faced by the family.
Officials are currently examining all aspects of the case to determine whether any criminal offence has been committed.
Child Welfare Remains Top Priority
District Child Protection officials stated that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. They confirmed that the newborn has been placed in a safe environment and that the welfare and best interests of the child remain the highest priority.
The authorities further informed that additional legal action, if required, will be initiated based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
Residents Demand Strict Action
Meanwhile, many local residents have called for stringent legal measures if the allegations are found to be true. Investigators are also examining whether the incident has any links to child trafficking, human trafficking or other criminal activities.
