No Shortage of Fuel or Essential Commodities in Tripura: Minister Sushant Chowdhury

Sushant Chowdhury on Thursday assured that there is no shortage of essential commodities, including petrol, diesel and LPG, in Tripura and urged people not to crowd petrol pumps unnecessarily out of panic.

Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat, the Food and Consumer Affairs Minister said adequate stocks of fuel and daily essentials are available across the state.

He informed that a high-level meeting was held with Food Department Secretary K. Sasikumar, Director Sumit Lodh, representatives of Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, along with Sub-Divisional Administrators of Sadar, Jirania and Mohanpur subdivisions and other department officials.

According to the minister, officials confirmed during the meeting that sufficient petrol and diesel stocks are available at all 149 petrol pumps operating in the state.

He also clarified that there is no shortage of cooking gas or LPG and, therefore, no decision has been taken to introduce rationing at fuel outlets.

Sushant Chowdhury stated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has triggered a global energy concern, but rumours about an energy crisis in India and Tripura are baseless.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation, the minister said the state government has adopted cost-effective precautionary measures to avoid unnecessary consumption.

He stressed that such measures should not be interpreted as an indication of fuel scarcity in the state.

The minister further assured residents that Tripura has adequate reserves of fuel and essential commodities.

Sharing details of food stock availability under the public distribution system, he said the state currently has rice stock sufficient for 84 days, wheat for 57 days, sugar for 28 days and pulses for 34 days.

In the open market, he said stocks include rice for 84 days, pulses for 38 days, edible oil for 87 days, onions for 32 days, potatoes for 18 days, flour for 37 days, sugar for 31 days and salt for 122 days.

The minister warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting black marketing or creating an artificial shortage of fuel and essential goods in violation of government regulations.

He added that officials have been directed to conduct regular inspections at markets and petrol pumps to prevent hoarding and illegal trade.

Responding to questions regarding transportation of fuel in large drums from petrol pumps, Sushant Chowdhury explained that fuel is being supplied for various infrastructure and development works underway in the state.

He said such fuel distribution is being carried out through authorised slips issued by sub-divisional administrations.

The minister also stated that the concerned department has been instructed to implement stricter rules for issuing fuel supply slips in the coming days.
