Opposition Parties Move CJI Over Election Commission's SIR Exercise, Seek Judicial Review

INDIA Bloc Alleges Voter Deletions, Demands Supreme Court Scrutiny of Electoral Revision Process
In a significant political development, a coalition of 23 opposition parties along with an Independent Member of Parliament has formally approached the Chief Justice of India (Supreme Court), expressing serious concerns over the Election Commission 's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and several other election-related issues.
The joint representation, signed by leaders from major opposition parties, seeks judicial intervention over what the opposition describes as irregularities in the voter list revision process.
Opposition Questions Transparency of SIR Exercise
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai strongly criticized the ongoing SIR exercise, alleging that the process lacks transparency and undermines democratic principles.

According to Annadurai, the primary objective of the electoral system should be to ensure that every eligible adult citizen is able to exercise their franchise. He alleged that the current revision exercise appears focused on deleting names from electoral rolls rather than expanding voter participation.
Top Opposition Leaders Sign Letter
The letter has reportedly been endorsed by several senior opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and prominent leaders from Left parties.

Independent Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has also signed the representation.
Judiciary Remains Last Hope, Says Opposition
In their communication, opposition leaders argued that citizens look to the judiciary whenever constitutional institutions fail to function as expected.
The letter reportedly highlights concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and outlines the possible impact of the SIR exercise on voters across multiple states.
Congress Says Opposition Stands United
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated on social media platform X that the decision to approach the judiciary was finalized during the INDIA Bloc meeting held on June 8.
Ramesh emphasized that opposition parties remain united on issues relating to electoral transparency and democratic fairness.
TMC Alleges SIR Being Used to Benefit BJP
Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghosh alleged that the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision process is being used in a manner that could potentially influence election outcomes in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
She said opposition parties have sought judicial scrutiny to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
According to Ghosh, this is the first occasion on which as many as 23 opposition parties have jointly appealed to the Chief Justice of India regarding concerns over the implementation of the SIR exercise.
INDIA Bloc Raised Issue During June 8 Meeting
The issue was extensively discussed during the seventh meeting of the INDIA alliance held in New Delhi on June 8. Leaders from 25 political parties participated in the meeting.
Senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee attended physically, while Uddhav Thackeray and Hemant Soren joined virtually.
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Kharge alleged that millions of voters had been removed from electoral rolls through the SIR exercise and announced plans to seek judicial intervention.
The opposition alliance also urged the Union Government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss inflation, unemployment and the overall economic situation in the country.
The INDIA Bloc further decided to hold coordination meetings every two months. The next meeting of the alliance is scheduled to take place in Hyderabad on August 8.
