Parliament Stalls Over Ram Temple Donation Theft Controversy; Opposition Presses Centre for Answers

Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament (sansad) were repeatedly interrupted on Tuesday as the alleged theft of donations linked to the Ram Temple triggered a political confrontation between the ruling NDA and the Opposition during the 12th day of the Monsoon Session.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed noisy protests, slogan-shouting and sharp exchanges, leaving little room for legislative business before repeated adjournments.

Lok Sabha Adjourned After Brief Proceedings

The Lok Sabha assembled in the afternoon but functioned for only a short period amid continuous protests by Opposition MPs.

During the brief sitting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced tax amendment legislation before disruptions intensified. As members continued raising slogans over the Ram Temple donation controversy, the Speaker adjourned the House until Wednesday.

Rajya Sabha Witnesses Heated Political Clash

The Rajya Sabha also struggled to conduct normal business.

The Upper House was first adjourned within minutes of assembling at 11 a.m. Proceedings resumed around noon but again came to a halt after nearly 20 minutes due to continued protests. Members reconvened later in the afternoon before the House was finally adjourned for the day.

Kharge Questions Centre Over Alleged Temple Donation Theft

Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the Centre's response to the controversy, pointing out that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was constituted by the Union Government and entrusted with more than 70 acres of land.

Kharge also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had participated in major Ram Temple events and asked why central investigative agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), had not initiated action. He demanded that the government clarify its position inside Parliament.

Rijiju Hits Back at Congress, Samajwadi Party

Responding to the Opposition's allegations, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress and the Samajwadi Party of adopting double standards.

He said the parties had opposed the construction of the Ram Temple in the past and were now attempting to exploit the present controversy for political gain. Rijiju maintained that those who had earlier objected to the temple project should first explain their previous stand before questioning the government.

Repeated Slogans Force Adjournments

Throughout the day, Opposition members continued raising slogans over the alleged theft of Ram Temple offerings, making it impossible for both Houses to function smoothly.

As disruptions continued, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, while the Lok Sabha also concluded its business early after repeated interruptions.
