Playoff race tightens after Delhi Capitals defeat

Delhi Capitals crashed to their seventh defeat in Indian Premier League 2026 after suffering an eight-wicket loss against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday. The result has almost ended Delhi’s playoff hopes, while Kolkata kept their campaign alive.

After winning the toss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Kolkata opted to field first and produced a disciplined bowling display to restrict Delhi to 142 for 8 in 20 overs. Chasing the modest target, Kolkata reached 143 for 2 in just 14.2 overs. Finn Allen played a sensational unbeaten knock of 100 runs to lead the chase comfortably.

The victory marked Kolkata’s fourth consecutive win of the season, while Delhi registered their seventh loss.

Kolkata now have 9 points from 10 matches, winning four and losing five games so far. Their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are still alive, although they must win all their remaining matches with strong margins and also rely on favourable outcomes in other fixtures.

Delhi, meanwhile, have managed only four victories in 11 matches and remain on 8 points. Even if they win all their remaining games, they can reach a maximum of 14 points. Over the last four IPL seasons, only one team has qualified for the playoffs with 14 points — during the 2024 edition. In the 2022, 2023 and 2025 seasons, teams finishing fourth had secured at least 16 points.

In Saturday’s key encounter, Rajasthan Royals will look to strengthen their playoff push against Gujarat Titans.

Rajasthan have collected 12 points from 10 matches and every remaining game has become crucial for them. To remain firmly in the playoff race, the Royals need to win at least three of their last four matches. A victory against Gujarat would significantly boost their top-four hopes, while a defeat could make qualification extremely difficult.

Gujarat Titans are also placed on 12 points from 10 matches. Their upcoming matches against Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings will decide their playoff fate. Net run rate may also become a decisive factor if the team slips in any of the remaining fixtures.

The Orange Cap standings remained unchanged after 51 matches this season. Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad continues to lead the run-scoring chart with 494 runs in 11 innings. His teammate Abhishek Sharma occupies second place with 475 runs, while KL Rahul of Delhi Capitals is third with 468 runs.

The Purple Cap race also saw no changes in the top three positions following the Delhi-Kolkata clash. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Anshul Kamboj have both claimed 17 wickets in 10 matches each, though Bhuvneshwar remains ahead because of a superior economy rate. Prince Yadav currently holds the third position in the wicket-taking list.
