PM Modi Heads to Bishkek for 26th SCO Summit on August 31

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit to Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, on August 31 to participate in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, marking a key phase of his four-day Central Asia tour.
After completing his Uzbekistan visit, PM Modi will head to the Kyrgyz capital for the SCO leaders’ meeting scheduled for August 31 and September 1, 2026. India has been a full member of the SCO since 2017. The 2026 summit also marks 25 years of the organisation.
At the Bishkek summit, India is expected to highlight three major priorities — security, connectivity and opportunity. Counter-terrorism, regional stability, economic cooperation and connectivity are likely to remain important areas of discussion.
Modi is also scheduled to hold bilateral interactions with SCO leaders on the sidelines of the summit. A meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin has been scheduled, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to attend the Bishkek gathering.
The Prime Minister will additionally attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, an event showcasing the cultural and sporting traditions of Central Asia.
PM Modi Receives Uzbekistan's Highest State Honour
Before travelling to Kyrgyzstan, PM Modi was in Tashkent for a state visit to Uzbekistan from August 29 to 30.
During the visit, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev conferred Uzbekistan's highest state honour, the Order of Oliy Darajali Dustlik, on Modi. The award recognises his contribution to strengthening the strategic partnership and bilateral relations between India and Uzbekistan.
Modi and Mirziyoyev also held delegation-level discussions covering areas including trade and investment, defence, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people relations.
India-Uzbekistan Trade and Defence Cooperation
The two countries are seeking to expand economic engagement while strengthening strategic cooperation. Defence collaboration, energy security, digital connectivity and investment are among the areas receiving greater attention.
India's engagement with Uzbekistan is also significant because Central Asia possesses important energy resources and critical minerals. New Delhi has been seeking stronger economic and strategic partnerships across the region.
Why PM Modi's Kyrgyzstan Visit Matters for India
1. SCO and Regional Security
The SCO remains an important platform for India to engage with major Eurasian powers and address regional security challenges. Terrorism, extremism and separatism remain key concerns for New Delhi.
2. Connectivity Across Central Asia
India is seeking stronger transport and economic links with Central Asian countries. Improved connectivity can support trade, investment and wider access to regional markets.
3. Energy and Critical Minerals
Central Asia's natural-resource base makes the region strategically significant for India's long-term energy and economic requirements. Greater cooperation could help diversify India's sources of important resources.
4. Counter-Terrorism Cooperation
India is pushing for closer international cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism. The situation in Afghanistan and its wider security implications also make Central Asia important to India's regional strategy.
