PM Modi Meets Putin in Bishkek, Calls for End to Ukraine War

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, SCO Summit 2026 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, with the Ukraine conflict and India-Russia ties among the key issues discussed.
The meeting began on a warm note, with Modi and Putin sharing an embrace before entering into bilateral discussions. The talks came as India continues to maintain diplomatic engagement with both Russia and other major global powers amid continuing international conflicts.
Modi Calls for Peace and End to Prolonged Wars
During his conversation with Putin, Prime Minister Modi underlined India's consistent position that conflicts should ultimately be resolved through dialogue and peaceful diplomacy.
Referring to the Ukraine situation, Modi said the world must move beyond prolonged warfare and concentrate on bringing conflicts to an end. He reaffirmed India's support for every genuine effort aimed at establishing peace.
The Prime Minister also stressed that resolving disputes through peaceful means is not merely a diplomatic objective but a broader humanitarian responsibility.
Modi Invites Putin to India for BRICS Summit
A major outcome of the meeting was Modi's invitation to Putin to attend the BRICS Summit in India next month.
Modi said India would be hosting the BRICS gathering soon and expressed his confidence that the Russian president and his delegation would receive a warm welcome in the country.
The invitation assumes significance as India and Russia continue to maintain close diplomatic, economic and strategic engagement.
Putin Highlights Growing India-Russia Partnership
Putin described the relationship between Moscow and New Delhi as a “special and privileged partnership”, while expressing satisfaction over its continued expansion.
The Russian president credited Modi's sustained attention to bilateral relations for helping strengthen political, economic and people-to-people connections between the two countries.
Putin also pointed to growing educational and tourism links. According to the Russian side, the number of Indian students studying in Russia has increased substantially in recent years, reaching around 40,000.
He also highlighted cultural exchanges between the two countries and rising tourism, while noting that India and Russia coordinate closely through platforms including the United Nations, BRICS, G20 and SCO.

Modi Holds Talks With Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia
The Putin meeting was part of a wider diplomatic schedule for Modi in Bishkek.
The Prime Minister also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with the two leaders discussing bilateral relations and developments in the West Asia conflict. Modi reiterated India's position that disputes should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi separately met Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, discussing the strengthening of the India-Kyrgyzstan strategic partnership, including economic cooperation and people-to-people ties.
He also held bilateral discussions with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.
26th SCO Summit Underway in Bishkek
The 26th SCO Summit is being held in Bishkek from August 31 to September 1, 2026. India has been a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation since 2017.
The summit provides India an important platform to engage with Russia, China, Iran, Central Asian countries and other participating states on security, connectivity, economic cooperation and regional stability.
Modi is also scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, which is being hosted in Kyrgyzstan.
India-Russia Engagement Gains Fresh Diplomatic Significance
The Modi-Putin meeting comes at a significant moment in international diplomacy, with India continuing to advocate dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts while maintaining its longstanding strategic partnership with Russia.
The invitation to Putin for the upcoming BRICS Summit further highlights the importance New Delhi attaches to its engagement with Moscow.
