Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed India’s 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of FY2026-27, describing the performance as a major achievement reflecting the resilience and collective strength of the Indian people. The latest GDP figure was stronger than expectations and came despite global economic uncertainties, supply-chain disruptions and oil-price pressures.
In a social media video message on Tuesday, Modi congratulated citizens for the latest economic performance and stressed that India must preserve its growth momentum. He linked the achievement to the determination, hard work and collective contribution of the people.
The Prime Minister also renewed his appeal for avoiding unnecessary gold purchases. He urged citizens to buy gold only when there is a genuine requirement, making the appeal part of his broader emphasis on strengthening the domestic economy.
Modi further called on Indians to reduce spending on foreign holidays and weddings held abroad. He encouraged citizens to spend more within the country and support Indian-made products and domestic businesses.
The Prime Minister said greater emphasis on Swadeshi, local products and self-reliance would help strengthen India’s economic foundation. He also reiterated the vision of building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, arguing that sustained economic momentum is necessary for the country’s long-term development.
Taking an apparent swipe at the Opposition, Modi referred to people whom he accused of spreading pessimism and what he called an “echo of lies.” His remarks came amid political debate over India’s economic performance and Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the government.

Modi expressed confidence that India could become a developed nation by the time it completes 100 years of independence, saying the younger generation would inherit a stronger and more developed country.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign has focused on issues concerning students and young people, including alleged paper leaks, examination irregularities, the cost of education and unemployment.
The latest economic data show that India’s 7.8% GDP expansion during April-June 2026 exceeded the Reserve Bank of India’s earlier 7% projection. Manufacturing, private investment, consumer demand and financial services were among the factors supporting the stronger quarterly performance.
The government now faces the challenge of sustaining this momentum amid global geopolitical uncertainty, elevated energy costs and inflationary pressures.
