PM Modi Urges Indians To Stop Buying Gold, Save Fuel Amid Global Crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called upon citizens to reduce the consumption of petrol, diesel, and gas in view of rising global tensions and increasing fuel prices triggered by ongoing conflicts in neighboring regions.

Addressing a BJP rally in Hyderabad, Modi said India remains highly vulnerable to global energy shocks because the country lacks large-scale crude oil reserves.

“We must reduce dependence on petrol and diesel. Work from home should be encouraged wherever possible. In cities with metro rail services, people should use public transport,” the Prime Minister said.

He emphasized that the global fuel crisis is placing economic pressure on India and urged citizens to contribute through lifestyle changes and economic discipline.

Five Major Appeals Made By PM Modi

1. Avoid Buying Gold For One Year

The Prime Minister appealed to people not to buy or donate gold for the next year, saying gold imports consume a massive amount of foreign exchange.

“In earlier wars, people donated gold for the nation. Today, there is no such requirement, but citizens can help by avoiding gold purchases for one year,” he said.

According to industry estimates by ASSOCHAM, Indian households and temples collectively hold nearly 50,000 tonnes of gold valued at around $10 trillion.

2. Reduce Petrol And Diesel Consumption

Modi advised people to minimize unnecessary vehicle use, adopt carpooling, and use metro rail systems wherever available.

He also encouraged offices to adopt hybrid or work-from-home systems to reduce fuel consumption and urban congestion.

3. Cut Down Edible Oil Usage

The Prime Minister stressed reducing edible oil consumption, stating that even a small reduction by every family would significantly lower import dependency while improving public health.

India imports a major portion of its edible oil requirements, making the sector sensitive to global price fluctuations.

4. Promote Natural Farming

Modi urged farmers to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers and move toward natural farming practices.

He said India should target reducing chemical fertilizer consumption by at least half to strengthen sustainable agriculture and reduce import costs.

5. Postpone Foreign Travel

The Prime Minister also appealed to citizens to temporarily postpone foreign travel for weddings, holidays, and other non-essential purposes due to rising international fuel costs and economic uncertainties.

He said reducing overseas travel would help conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves during challenging global conditions.

India’s Gold Reserves Among Largest In The World

Reports suggest Indian households possess more gold than the combined reserves of the world’s top 10 central banks. Experts believe gold remains deeply linked with Indian cultural traditions, weddings, and investments.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid concerns over inflation, rising crude oil prices, and global economic instability affecting import-dependent countries like India.
